    1. [HANCOCK-L] Yankee Hancocks
    2. Hello Hancocks: I have been reading this list for months and haven't seen any Hancocks above the Mason-Dixon line. I am descended from a Benjamin Hancock that I believe was from New England and who married Lucretia Proctor (both b. 1780s). I believe Benjamin was son of Asa Hancock and Abigail Shepardson, but no proof of that yet. Does anyone have a connection? I'd like to hear from any who connect to this line. Thanks in advance. Chuck

    3. Jan, Here is what I have on Henry Graves Hancock and so some of the children listed in your e-mail is in conflict with the ones found in the 1850 Federal Census. I will send added info in a private e-mail to you. There is a Sarah, but she was born later. And the Sarah given in your e-mail would have been born before Sarah & Henry married (which of course could not have been, but unlikely since there is a later Sarah). I also do not see these listed in any census. 10. Hannah E. b 1839-1-24 and 11.Harriett M. b 1841-4-8 Audrey HENRY GRAVES HANCOCK Henry Graves Hancock, son of (Capt.) John Hancock & Nancy Ann Graves, was born 19 March 1796 in probably Woodford County or Franklin County, Kentucky. He and some of his siblings removed to Ohio with his parents eventually locating in Reily Township, Butler County. Here he apparently grew to manhood and on 23 May 1822 he married Sarah Ella Watson in Butler County, Ohio. Here they made their home until about 1835 when the family relocated to Jackson Township in Ripley County, Indiana. Other siblings also moved to Ripley County, Indiana as adults, as did nieces and nephews. 2. Jean, Your information is interesting. I do know that John L was in the had a wife named Maria and was in the 1850 census in Warren Ct, Ms. He had Charity, Mary Caroline and James at the time.He was born in 1817 Tn according to this census. His bothers Tarleton and Leonard are also listed here. I can not discount that there can be a connection because, Tarleton was born in Kentucky. The one we are trying to find has Isaac, Tarleton, John L, William, Joel W, George, Leonard, and we know there are a few more brothers and possibly a sister or two. John L Sr was born in Va and married to a Tabitha Beilen. I guess John was deceased by 1850 because Tabitha was living with Leonard. The family came from Va to Tenn, Kentucky, and then into Mississippi. I will keep your information because the names are some of the same in the family I am searching. My grandfather was Robert Scott Hancock, and he had a brother named Thomas I. We beleive that one of these brothers could be there father. We do not we are connected to this family. Please, keep my information we may make a connection later. Mary

    3. Thanks Helene, Delilah Frances DOUTHIT just might be kin to my NC DOUTHITs who moved to then Lawrence/now Sharp Co AR in 1859. My Uriah J DOUTHIT/DOWTHITT married as his 2nd wife Sarah M[artin] SMITH in Surry Co NC. They removed to AR in 1859 and Uriah went "north" to MO to join the Union Army during the War of Northern Aggression ( this discovery was a heavy blow for my mother). Uriah died before 1868. According to a local history book, Uriah was murdered Christmas Day 1867 and his body wasn't found for 3 days. Ond of the few family stories my mother remembers from her grandmother (nee Alice Bell DOUTHIT, d/o Uriah & Sarah Smith DOWTHITT) was her being stuck in a hold in the ground with her baby brother and the family silver, then covered with a big piece of wood and then further covered with dirt...buried alive in other words. Mom always thought it was to protect them from the Yankees. However, it also seems possible that Klan Night Riders might have come and taken Uriah! away. He lived in Evening Shade AR, which was a Klan enclave. That particular year the Klan acted with such violence that they were repudiated by the Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, former CSA Gen Nathan Bedford Forrest, who came to Evening Shade from Giles Co TN (home of the Klan) and ordered them to disband. The local Wizard left the country for at least 10 years. One of his kinfolks of a later generation wrote the local history that tells about Uriah's murder. Uriah was in Company E of the 47th MO Infantry. I don't know where he's buried. ~malinda Helene Pockrus <[email protected]> wrote:Delilah F. Hancock - Wife of William A Hancock.
