    1. [HANCOCK-L] DNA Project - Changes on four markers
    2. Hello All, We received a message from FamilyTreeDNA.com, who are the lab who discovered the last four markers that are used in your DNA results, that they are changing those four numbers by decreasing each by one. This change doesn't affect your results or matches as all testees will have the same numbers changed in the same way. In case you have written your markers numbers down, you may want to go to the website results page and see the changes. http://small-stuff.com/HANCOCK/DNA/results.htm Note* This only affects those who have received their marker numbers to date. The future reported results will reflect the new method. Julia French Wood

If you should look at the prices on the FamilyTreeDNA.com website, you will see that they are a lot higher than if you join through our Hancock DNA website. Rootsweb doesn't like us to quote prices on the discussion lists. Julia

    3. Julia, Thank you for that explanation. That helps for the moment. I will return to the archived previous explanations you have given, also. I’m sure that will help. I looked thru the test company website and tried to absorb all I could there. I am sure this will be a gradual learning process. Thanks again, Linda

Well, as complex matches occur, I will explain them, but until then the only thing going on is that the two results that are listed in white have no matches, and I will continue to post any that have no matches in white. Any and all that have matches, will be posted in matching colors with the mutations shown in a different color as I have done in the fourth result. Mutations occur at an average of one in every 20 births, but they can occur more often, or not at all. It is sort of like rolling dice. There is no way to know when or if your will get a certain result. They are finding that some families have more mutations than others. The generations between two participants are counted up from each participant the Most Recent Common Ancestor (MRCA) so if there are 7 generations from you to your earliest Hancock and the same for the person you match that is 14 generations between you. Of course, the earliest Hancock that the two of you have found may not be your MRCA. You must compare paper research to find him, and sometimes he is beyond your research, perhaps in Europe before American immigration. I belong to the [email protected] list and the conversations get very technical most of the time, but a search of their archives may answer many questions that you have. Also, from our Hancock DNA website you can click on "Questions" and get answers from FamilyTreeDNA.com, the company that is doing our Project. In a nutshell, they consider from 0 to 3 mutations a match in the same surname family, so I will not be explaining those simple mutations, but will mark the mutations with a different color. Any participants that have the majority of their background the same color on the results chart are considered matches and of the same Hancock line. Bear in mind that the more mutations that occur the farther away the MRCA may be. If more complex matches occur, I will explain them. If you have specific questions, I will do my best to answer them. Julia

Not all the participants have mailed their Consent form and their Generation chart, which I will need to post the results. If you haven't done so, visit the website and click on Consent to Post Results, print out the form, fill it out and mail it to me along with a chart of your line. The four earliest generations are the most important with the dates and locations of births, marriages and deaths, as well as the data for the spouses. http://www.small-stuff.com/HANCOCK/DNA/ When you visit the "Results" page, always "Reload" the page so you will get the latest edition. 3. Hey, Everyone, Check out: http://www.small-stuff.com/HANCOCK/DNA/results.htm Julia burned more than the "midnight oil" to get this done for us. We owe her much gratitude for all her hard work and being the catalyst for another worthy HANCOCK project. Thank you, Julia. Anyone else out there interested in having the DNA testing. Was so surprised when my hubby and another came up with a DNA match already...however, we need to discover where the common link and connection is. My hubby's roots are in VA and track to Kentucky and then Ohio; and the other's roots begin later in South Carolina into Tennessee. So...what branch does each come off of? Kudos to Julia for all her dedication and hard work. Audrey

You have a match with 25 markers. There is one mutation, but is considered a match. Mutations occur on an average of one in twenty births, but they can occur at any time, or not at all. We consider from one to three mutations a match within the same surname. I have a website waiting for the results, but must have your first four generations with dates and places to identify your line. The person with whom you matched, also, failed to provide me with his first four generations, so I can't post his either, until I recieve the data. You can always view your markers as well as other data on the website that is provided to you by the company, FamilyTreeDNA.com using the code that they sent to you in th email about your match. Keep that code, as you will need it everytime your log in to their site. Our Hancock DNA page is: http://www.small-stuff.com/HANCOCK/DNA/ You will click on "Test Results" but I don't have them up yet. I will let everyone know when I have them ready. Oh, BTW, we received four results, but only two were matches.
