Ed, Do you happen to know when Rebecca died and where she is buried? I think she died after having her last child George W. Hancock who was born Dec 9, 1819 in Shenandoah Co, Va. Because James Hancock married Mary Polly Jones Jameson Aug 22, 1820. James is not buried next to his second wife who died in OH. I'm thinking he might be by Rebecca. I have an ancestor also named John Hancock, He married 2nd Catherine Ramey, in 1811,in Shenandoah County Va. Catherine came from the Ramey family, she was a relative of Lewis Ramey (They named the Lauray Caverns after him) We know that Catherine married first a man named Brown, then she married John Hancock. They had many children. We do know that John Hancock died on his way from Shenandoah County, Va to Morgantown West Va. He died in 1830. He could be a son of your John Hancock. John's family has been a mystery to us for a long time. We have two more matches in our DNA Project. Remember when you visit any of the Project pages, to "Reload" the page to get the latest edition. http://small-stuff.com/HANCOCK/DNA/results.htm Another participant has matched with Capt. John Hancock of VA. This is Henry C. Hancock who was born in VA and moved to Greene Co., GA. He matches with 12 markers with one mutation. You may notice that is the first 12 numbers of most of the Hancock markers, most are almost matches, but when you look at the next 13, there are differences between the groups. I haven't seen any this close without matching in all my other Projects. This means that these Hancock families were most likely related many, many, generations back in the Old Country. The Haplotype is very British. Even though the new match has one mutation, the chances are that it would be a match with 25 markers because this Capt. John line has markers that are more unique than the other groups. Our NEXT MATCH is a Proven Descendant of James Hancock of Craven and Jones Co., NC matches with a proven descendant of James Hancock of GA who married Jestern. The first participant has documents that prove, without a doubt, that James Hancock of Craven and Jones Co., NC is the son of James Hancock and Tamar Jones. You may not remember our last discussion of this line, but my theory is that Durham Hancock of Craven Co., NC who sold all his property by 1748 in NC and is later, found in GA, as a land owner, most likely, married in GA, had a son, and named him, James. That is the reason that James named his first son, Durham. BTW, his son, Durham, was born in GA and not in NC as most of the published reports state. If you look at the census records of 1850 & 1860, he states that he was born in GA. I feel certain that James was born in GA, also, and, most likely, was never in NC. Julia French Wood
Why don't you contact me directly and I will see what I can match for you? Yes, William, Charles, and Jonathan were from Thomas Co... Thomasville, Ga. They moved to Jasper Co and Newton Co., Texas by 1872. Patricia Haynes [email protected]
Am reposting my William H. Harrell in Georgia. Info came from "History of Butts Co., Georgia," p. 642-643. William H. Harrell married Judith Wise in Oglethorpe Co. Ga, 15 June 1815. Wm. H. was born. 21 Feb 1786, Richmond, VA and died 8 Nov 1839, Jasper Co., GA. Children of Wm H. & Judith were: Harriet Newel Hancock m. James Trammell Maddox Mary E. Hancock m. Isaac Slaughter Emily Hancock m. John Lee McMichael Sophia Hancock m. Pollard Bickerstaff (my line) Julia Ann Hancock (twin) m Edward Herndon Adams William Hopson Hancock (twin) m. Nancy Goolsby Other info that I have gotten says that Wm. H. came to Georgia for his health. His father (unknown) was said to have disinherited him because he married a planter's daughter (Judith Wise). I don't know if Wm's parents were still in VA, where he was born, or had moved to NC, SC, GA or elsewhere. However, I do assume that he had some relationship to other Hancocks in the Oglethorpe Co, GA. area. (Judith's family had come from Oglethorpe Co to Butts Co, next door to Jasper, so her & Wm. H.'s move must have been with them.) I have not found any additional info on this family for several years. Cecile Harrell
In regard to the two messages copied below; were these HANCOCKs (William, Jonathan) living in GEORGIA? I have been chasing my HANCOCK line for several years and haven't yet found a connection with other Hancocks so far. I was just hoping to glean some information and make a connection here if they were from Georgia. Thomasville is a town in Georgia and also there are Newton and Jasper Counties here where I live and very near where my known HANCOCK line was living 1820-1924. From there they moved to Griffin GA, Spalding County where most of my line ended. There is one son from the direct line, William C. Hancock still living in FL that I am aware of. Can we make a connection? Yes, but, unless they are genealogy researchers, they may not understand the importance of the DNA testing or want to spend the money. As you know, it requires a male of the surname of Hancock. A match with another Hancock participant proves that they are from the same line, so the desire is to match with someone who has proven their line way back. We have 18 participants to date, so the chances for matches is getting better and better, We have many matches, and have identified four separate lines at this time. The cost is $99.00 for the 12 marker test and $169.00 for the 25 marker test. Let me know if there are more questions. Sue, you were supposed to order from our website. Contact them and tell them of your mistake and ask them to move you to our Hancock group and refund part of your money. They are very easy to deal with. The president of the company, Bennet Greenspan, used to answer the email, but he has hired some help, now, so you will most likely talk to Mark Price. Tell him that I sent you. He knows me well by now. The email address is: [email protected] Give them your Kit # that is on your email from them. Julia
