    1. [HANCOCK-L] DNA testing and Privacy
    2. Hello all, This is just a reminder. If you have participated in any of my DNA Projects you will notice that the consent form that I require to be signed, when given permission to post the results to the group website (which is public), states that I will "never" divulge the name of the person tested in connection with the DNA sample. I must request that the other matching persons who are privy to the names of the testees honor my promise and not announce to the list or another person via email the name of the person who submitted the DNA for the test. If the person submitting the DNA wishes to let others know their identity it up to them to divulge it. Please, only speak of the match using the Ancestor line and never link it, via this list, to the person who participated. I appreciate your understanding in this matter. Julia French Wood

    3. Hi Folks, I hope some of you watched the PBS special last night about the Bubonic Plague in Europe in the 1600's. It seems that a woman named Elizabeth Hancock buried several children who died with the plague but she was never affected with it. According to the folks on the special, there is a certain "gene" that several people were born with and they did not suffer from the plague---including Elizabeth Hancock. I am sure there will be a repeat of the special and it is quite a fascinating study. If you want to read more about it, go to http://www.pbs.org/ http://www.pbs.org/wnet/secrets/ click on all case files in top right corner, highlight Mystery of the Black Death. Jean Hancock in TX

    3. Do you know where in MN he moved to? I am trying to find more info on William H. Hancock but know almost nothing about him except that he married my grandmother in 1937 in MN. I think he may have come from the Brown's Valley area of MN. My grandmother was 44 at the time of the marriage but I have no idea what his age would have been. Just thought it was possible he could be a descendant of Orin Asa Hancock. My grandmother's ancestor's also came from NY and possibly Canada. 3. Hi Kate, In the 1860 census Minnesota Wabasha CO. Cook Valley P.O. on pg. 179 It is really hard to read census. Some of the names I couldn't tell what it was. Hancock, Orin A 57 b. NY Farmer Meriba? 48 PA ? A. 17 Male Farmer Silvia 21 F Michigan Eliza 19 F " Orin 14 M " Edward 12 M " ?all 7 M " Next household Hancock, Samuel 30 PA " , Elvira? 26 NY " , Adellaide 4 MN " , Elizabeth 1 MN Coon? , Alice 11 PA Servant Hancock, David 34 Canada Carpenter Winter, Winter 30 NY Farm Laborer Could this Samuel Orin's son? Since his wife was born in Pennsylvania, and Samuel was from Pennsylvannia maybe he's their son. The ages fit. I will look in the 1850 census the next time I go to the FHC if you want. I hope this helps. Becky At 10:48 AM 9/3/2003 -0400, you wrote: >Has anyone seen the name Orin Asa Hancock b. western NY 1803, married to >Meriba Hall b. Penn? 3. Becky, Thanks very much for going to all this trouble for me. Thomas was living with his mother Mary (Hack) Grimes' family in 1860 in Fountain Co. Indiana The head of household was George Hack. His father John L Grimes was not listed and could have been dead, but I don't think so because the census line where John's name should have been is blank, Since no lines are to be skipped within one household by census takers, it is my oppinion that the line was left blank when the census was transcribed because it probably was not legible. Had he been dead the line woul not have existed. I don't know for sure who John L.'s father was but I'm relatively sure it was Leonard Grimes. Thanks very much for the info on Elizabeth. I will keep both of them and hope that maybe we can find something for certain. I don't know about when Robert and Nancy died or if Nancy remarried after Robert died as she was much younger than Robert. If William Hancock turns out to be the right one then his wife Sally died in 1872 just two years before Elizabeth and Thomas married. The Robert Hancock family and the William Hancock family are the only two I know of in Indiana that fits the criteria of both of Elizabeth's parent's . I know that a Indiana was plagued with Diptheria around that time and literally hundreds of people died of it. Many more moved away. A lot of Indianan's moved to Iowa around that time too, and some moved to Kansas others to Illinois. Then there was also the Indian uprisings. It is really amazing what all our ancesters had to endure, isn't it. Thank you again and I really do appreciate your help. God be with you. Have a beautiful day. V. 3. Hi This is a request to V. Mayfield. My Hancock remains a mystery, any help or direction you could offer would be greatly appreciated. My ancestors name was John Hancock. He married second Katy (Catherine) Ramey in 1811 Shenandoah Co Va. His possible birth date was 1764, he died April 10, 1830 in Monogala Co, W VA He died the year they moved to Morgantown W VA in 1830. This was definitly a 2nd marriage for Katy (Ramey) Brown Hancock We think it may also be a 2nd marriage for John but have no way to verify. We are looking for any mention of him that would reference his parents or where he came from. Also do you have the date of publication and the author for Families of Virginia. Thanks for any help your willing to offer. 3. Thanks for the offer. I actually have a copy of the book you are referring to, so I do have the article. Simon is my direct ancestor and I do have lots of information on him. I haven't found the records from my discussions with Arvil about this particular William, but will find them eventually. 1. [HANCOCK-L] Thomas Grimes and Elizabeth Hancock
    2. volleymom5
    3. Hi, I haven't had a lot of luck with Thomas Grimes. I did find a Thomas Grimes born in KY, in the 1860 census age 6 in a household with an Allen Owens family. Pg. 768 Warren Co. Bowling Green P.O. Box, IN. That doesn't mean he wasn't there, sometimes these indexes are so specific. For instance, on this one, if you type in Thomas, you don't get any of the abbreviations like Thos. or Tom. So I will keep looking. Do you know where he was born, or any other info about him, or if he was called by any other names ? I had a little more luck with Ellizabeth. In the 1860 Indiana census in Johnson County, Blue River Twp. P. 613 roll 271 there was a Hancock, Robert 45 Farm Laborer b. NC , Nancy 27 b. KY , John 17 serving? b. KY , Benjamin 11 b. IN , Lewis 5 b. IN , Elizabeth 3 b. IN Then again in the Johnson County IN census 1870 but this time in the Pleasant Twp, Pg. 394 there was a Elizabeth Hancock 14 Domestic Servant b. IN living with a James Howard family. There was also a Lizzie Hancock 13 listed at home in the 1870 Monroe County IN Beanblossom Twp p. 283 living with a Johnson Kegly family. I am wondering if her parents died or what happened to them. I will keep looking. I couldn't find the Robert Hancock in Indiana in 1870, but he could just be in a different state. I will keep looking. I hope this helps. Becky At 10:47 PM 9/1/2003 -0700, you wrote: >No I don't have access to an index, I've been searching page by page. 3. Lisa, I have some info on the Augustin Hancock who came to America with his father William Hancock in 1630. I also have quite a bit on the family of the Simon Hancock that came from England and settled in what is now called Princess Ann County, Virginia. I collected this info years ago, before computer-mania, and I believe the source was a book called " Families Of Virginia" There is an entire section devoted to various Hancock's who were among the first to settlers in Virginia. If it's not in your library they will probably order it for you. In the meantime I will be happy to share what I have with you, if you want, Just say so. I am new to this site so I'm not quite sure who has or who wants what, but some of the members have been so sweet about helping me ( especially Tori) that I would like to help others in return if I can. 1. Re: [HANCOCK-L] HANCOCK/SAYER CONNECTION
    2. Is there any way I could get a copy of your records on Frances Sayer who married John Hancock? I am a descendent of them. I am participating on the DNA project, my chart is up on the website under John Hancock of VA. 1740. I have alot of blanks I am trying to fill in. Sincerely, Clifford Charles Hancock
