I have been trying to search for the father of my John R. Hancock who was born in Jackson County Georgia in 1811. A story states that his father moved the family to a farm in Gwinnett County but the father died there. I do know that a Robert Hancock (the only Hancock) was on the 1820 census in Gwinnett and I do know that he died in late 1820 or early 1821. I am certain that Robert Hancock is the father of John R. Hancock. According to the 1880 census, John R. Hancock's father was born in North Carolina. I speculate that since Jackson Co. Georgia is in Northeast GA. just down I-85 and John R. was a farmer, that his father came from somewhere in the Moore County area. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Greetings Julia and all of my Hancock relatives, I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Dale Hancock. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. I am researching my Hancock ancestors with the assistance of my cousin Odessa Hancock Clayton and Jean Hancock the wife of 249962, Paul Carroll Hancock. My Maternal Grandmother is Emma Hancock, born 1869 in Tippah Co., Mississippi. She was the daughter of William M. Hancock, born 1842, in Marshall County, Mississippi. William was the son of Isom M. Hancock, born 1819, in Georgia. In order to use Y-DNA to try to link to my ancestors prior to Isom, I encouraged my cousin 249962, Paul Carroll Hancock to participate in the HANCOCK DNA Project. Our closest match within the group at 37 markers is a 36/37 match with 131099, Wesley Ira Hancock. This indicates with a 89% probability that we share a Common Ancestor within the past 8 generations and a 59 % probability that the Common Ancestor lived within the past 4 generations. Research indicates that we probably descend from the line of John Hancock. born 1743, Surry/Sussex Co., VA. Of great interest to us is the fact that within Group 3 we have a 25/25 match with 9 other participants. That includes Robert Lee Hancock and Warner Dean Hancock. A 25/25 match indicates with a 90% probability that we share a Common Ancestor within the past 10 generations. Of much greater value is how close do we match at 37 markers. A 37/37 match indicates with a 90% probability that you share a Common Ancestor within the past 4 generations. I hope that those members of Group 3 who have tested for 25 markers will upgrade to 37 markers so that we can discover markers which distinguish between the lines represented by these 9 participants. You can order the upgrade to 37 Markers by going to your FTDNA Personal Page and selecting the Link at the left of the page, " Order Tests & Upgrades", On that page select "Standard Orders". An Order form will open that has your data already on the form. At the bottom select the 37 Marker Test. The test will be performed on the original sample. An upgrade from 25 to 37 Markers cost $35 until the end of the month. You can access your FTDNA Personal Page by going to the Family Tree DNA Homepage < www.familytreedna.com > and entering your Kit Number and Password in the Blanks at the upper right of the Homepage. I Wish You All A Healthy, Happy, Blessed, New Year. Hi Julia, I'm still attempting to trace the ancestry of my Joseph Hancock. My great grandmother's family history states that he was born in England 13 November 1743. A history of Milford, Mass says that he was impressed on a British ship and jumped ship in Boston. In 1772, he married Susanah Mellen in Hopkinton, MA, then moved to Milford, MA about 1790. He and Susannah had nine children. About 1800, he and his family moved to Washington Co., NY, and I haven't been able to trace him after that. His daughter Sena (Asenath) married into my Lewis line. I've been able to trace most of the children for a few generations, but I haven't located any English vital records that I can attribute to him. I work on genealogy research nearly every day. Hi Everyone. This is Helene. First the bad news: My husband of 58 years, Marion "Tex" Udell Pockrus died Oct 5 here at home after a month of acute leukemia. He'd been sick for many years but kept a positive attitude. Sure miss his kibitzing about all this. Tex's grandmother Virginia Hancock married Rufus Pockrus. Her father was Elijah O. Hancock who was born in Georgia in 1838 and Isham Hancock was his father. Although the 1850 census says he was born in GA, it appears he was born probably in Randolph Co., NC to John who signed with a "J" Hancock and Sarah Augustine,( or was the last child of J Hancock's first child Isaiah who married Cassandra Deane.) I feel the naming patterns and moving patterns point to J. and Sarah Augustine as parents. However there is also an Isham in "J" Hancocks family born before 1867 that I have no children or marriage for. Could he be Odessa's Isom Hancock? I am finally getting some interest in the DNA on Isham Hancock .I am sure he had 2 families. One in NC (Oliff Bolin) and one in Alabama. He went back and forth between the two and Betsy in Alabama actually had the sheriff look for him (Isham H. Hancock)at one time when I believe he was in NC. Some of this has to actually be put on a time line. No burial placed can be ascertained for him in AL. Will be working on it this year. The censuses that don't show in Alabama are in NC and Vis versa. Very interesting. Helene From: "Eldon J. Hello Hancock family across the miles- The Joel Hancock family is still here in coastal North Carolina hoping someday that our Hector Hancock b-1712 in NC or SC will one day match some other Hancock DNA!! Still researching many family lines- our six children are all married, 15 grandchildren now. We are richly blessed! Hi, Like the rest of the Hancock researchers I am saddened to hear the news about Dale's passing. I am working on the John L Hancock family. The were in Wayne county, Kentucky where he married Tabitha Ballew. I have not found any new information but and still searching. We think that our T H Hancock may have stayed in Tennessee and married there. I know they passed through there on the way to Mississippi. I will let you know if anything new appears. Don, Which DNA Hancock line do you belong to. Many of my husband's line went to Indiana, as I'm sure other lines did also. Do you have a paper trail? I am so sorry to hear about Dale's passing. His family and friends have my deepest sympathy. As we get older, so many of us are losing our family, friends, and acquaintances. He was an avid HANCOCK researcher, and shared much with so many of us, as we strove to distinguish our different ancestries via a paper trail and make family connections. And, of more recent challenge has been trying to learn to which DNA chart and family lines we were connected. Like so many of us with gray hair, my activeness in researching has slowed somewhat. Takes me longer to get just those necessary things completed on a daily basis. I am still researching my husband's HANCOCK line after 45+ years, but that brick wall keeps hampering my progess, as well as others in our family line. Lately I have been communicating with many of those once in Julia's Chart 3 on her now defunct website and with some new DNA testees who match my husband's DNA. We just cannot find that elusive ancestor to whom so many of us in early colonial Virginia connect and whose descendants are found in so many counties in Virginia, North Carolina, & Tennessee. I have been unable to contact a number of the male participants who match my husband and others on Julia's FamilyTree DNA charts. It is apparent that our immigrant ancestor or his sons or male relatives was/were in America quite early. If you are of this DNA, you may wish to check this website, as we attempt to build knowledge about our ancestral line, which is not Julia's DNA line nor Arvil's DNA line. You may wish to check out this site and visit the links therein posted. Any additional information from any testee of this group would be appreciate. So many earliest ancestors as Benjamin HANCOCK for many of us. http://tinyurl.com/9kn89gw Audrey (Shields) Hancock

Julia, I am sorry to hear of Dale's passing. I too am growing older (now 73) and find myself rushing to process, while I am still alive and able to use a keyboard and mouse, the mass of genealogical data that seems to be flowing in at an increasing rate. My line of Hancocks migrated from England, then to Canada, and finally to California. Although I have many cousins, I am the last member of my line of Hancocks to actually carry the surname "Hancock". For me 2012 has been a very productive year. New data and ancestors were found further anchoring my branch of Hancocks to Devon, England. My DNA submissions confirmed my British ancestry -- and strangely identified an early genetic connection to the Wheaton family. Further, new data confirmed the marriages of members of my Hancock line to members of the Nickels family in Ontario, Canada. During 2012 living Wheaton descendants in Napa, California, and Nickels descendants in Sarnia, Canada, contributed valuable information about my Hancock line. Our website ( www.hancockonline.net ) continued to grow as my wife Karen and I added about 1,000 new records on our respective families and collateral lines during the year. We are thankful that over the past decades, 50 contributors (many now deceased) have supplied valuable data to our website -- which now includes over 2,100 source records and 1,500 photographs. During 2012, I made provisions to assure that the website will remain operational for 10 years after our passing. Once I had thought that retirement was to be the start of a more relaxed time of life; however, I am now very busy and anxious to reduce my large backlog of genealogical data waiting to be input to the website. But at least it's fun work! All is well here. I am still grateful to Lisa for helping me finding Nehemiah who was living in Hertford county in 1790! His grandson Thomas was sheriff in Ashboro NC in 1826 and went on to serve in house of representatives in 1828. Anyone connected to this family? Maybe this will be a "break the brick wall" year! Happy New Year everyone!
Hi everyone! I'm still working on the Randolph and Montgomery Co, NC Hancocks as time allows. Still very interested in finding all I can on these folks. Like Julia, I'm still the same, except a bit older. I have one daughter that will be leaving for Parris Island, SC soon, as she begins her journey of becoming a US Marine. While I'm very proud of her, I ask all of you to say a prayer for her safety. My other daughter is working long hours, as do I. Lea, any info you have on John Hancock in Montgomery Co would be welcomed by me, as John is the brother of my ancestor, Samuel. I wish everyone the best new year possible!! Julia, So sorry to hear of Dale's passing. He will be missed for sure on the Hancock family site. Thoughts and prayers for his family. Still working on the Georgia line of Hancock's. I was unable to do much on research due to having to go through cancer treatments, but with prayers and the Lord's hands I am in remission and back on the Hancock search. Seems like it is a never ending hobby. Everyone have a very Happy New Year. Lea in NC, still working on Rev. John Hancock of Montgomery Co, NC, I have found no new information in a while. John had 2-3 wives, and many children, some of whom, move west and some who stayed in NC. He was born in 1760 in VA, served in the Rev War, was ordained by Bishop Asbury after the Rev. War, some of his Children were (1) Betsy who married Etheldred Clemmons,(2) Mary who married John New, (3)Westly Hancock, (4) Sarah who married Spencer New, (5) Martha who married John Andrews, (6) Tabitha who married Kennith Hearne, (7) Piety who married Wilson Scarbrough, all of these children went west with there husbands, children who stayed in Montgomery co were (8) Nancy who married Wiley Harris, (9) Lucy who married Wiley Scarbrough, (10) Priscilla, who married Edmund Andrews, I am not sure where these sons went, if they stayed or moved away.(11) Elisha Hancock, (12) Frances Hancock, (13) Eli Hancock, These children are all mentioned in the Fayetteville Observer, in 1835, after John died. Anyone with information, please contact me. Thanks Lea
