    3. Lea, I'll send the info I have on Samuel later this week. One interesting thing I found in John's Rev. War file is that he enlisted in Craven County, NC. Why was he in Craven County? Samuel was in Augusta, GA when he enlisted, but he was living with his uncle, Francis Hancock. And Samuel moved to Montgomery Co., NC in 1792. Who was the Samuel Hancock in Montgomery Co, NC in the 1790 census? Question after question....never ending with this group of Hancocks!! 3. Carolyn, DId you get the file I sent to you about John J Hancock? It's several pages of notes that were found in files from several genealogy researchers. I did correspond with some of the writers of the letters included, but it's been several years ago. Hope you might find something useful in it! Lisa

    3. Julia, That is almost too much of a coincidence! I've wondered for years where Chief Hancock of the Tuscarora Indians got the name 'Hancock'. The good thing is the DNA can point us in the right direction. It's a great story!!! 2. Sue Jones
    3. Henry, First of all, I want to urge you to get the DNA test. PLEASE. I doubt you are connected to the Jamestown Hancocks, but the DNA test will be the only way to know.  I have been digging through mounds of old research tonight trying to figure out where I have seen the genealogy for Henry Grady Hancock III. Julia assures me it has never been on the Hancock DNA chart. I finally figured it out. In 2005 and 2006, Bill Felknor (spelled "nor" as opposed to "ner") shared a lot of material with me. I know you were once in touch with Bill. If you don't have the entire genealogy record dating back to Robert b. 1711 in VA, I do and will be happy to share it with you. You will need to send me your address offline so I can mail everything to you. There's a lot of paperwork. Bill Felknor only has documentation going back to Robert b. 1711 in VA. He speculates that your line goes all the way back to William, born about 1580 in England, but your DNA will be the only proof of that speculation. I even think there's reason to believe your line may be kin to my line. There's a lot of overlap in our families, so your DNA test results will be of great interest to me.  Sue in Texas   --- On Mon, 2/4/13, squeezeboxdood@verizon.net <squeezeboxdood@verizon.net> wrote: From: squeezeboxdood@verizon.net <squeezeboxdood@verizon.net> Subject: Re: [HANCOCK] Ancestors in the DNA Project To: hancock@rootsweb.com Date: Monday, February 4, 2013, 8:12 PM    Sue/Julia    I imagine I need to do a DNA test in order to be posted on the DNA Project.    I want to be in contact with a living breathing family member from that    line.  The number I have for Bill Felkner is no longer in service.  I tried    calling him this weekend.  I do appreciate all your help in advance.    Was there a William Hancock that came through Jamestown in 1619 and was    killed in the indian uprising at the Berkley Plantation in 1622?  There are    lots of Hancocks here in the area where I live in Newport News VA., only    about 30 miles from Jamestown.   There were lots of Hancocks who were born    and lived and died right here in this area who were related to his line if    he did, in fact, exist. 2. Sue Jones
    3. Audrey, I have been digging through my Yazoo County files from when I was researching John L. Hancock, who turned out to be in the Benjamin line. During that time I was in touch with someone on our list named Pat from Putnam Co., FL. Her mother was Mary Elia (don't know if Elia is a middle or last name). They are descendants of John L.  At that time Pat told me that her mother had George M. Hancock's will from Yazoo County and they were trying to determine if he was kin to John L.  Pat said George M. was born in 1805 in VA and had a brother named John H. and a sister named Nancy who was married to a Berkley. That's all I know. In 2003, Pat's email address was Pat91869@aol.com. If she were still getting Hancock emails, she probably would have responded when she saw Yazoo County in the subject line. 3. WHAT A STORY, Julia! And, what great sleuthing and finding at least some of the connections. Perhaps in time DNA will open more doors to solving some of those riddles. Since we started many years ago with our searches, just to be able to divide our families into DNA groupings at least allows each participant to focus on those within those who match. We still have a long ways to resolve the matches of those in Group 3. Some connections have been identified while others of Chart 3 are still left to wonder or breaking through the brick wall. Some time ago, I said that I would post a funny / interesting thing that I learned from my Hancock DNA matches and here it is. As you may know, I haven't been able to get past 1668 Craven / Bath, NC. This is from Accomack County, VA "On 2 Mar 1666, Ann, wife of Miles Gray, admitted adultrey with John Hancock from Apr 1665 to 2 Mar 1666 and asks husband's forgiveness. On 18 Feb 1667, Ann had a bastard child and Miles left her. Ann Toft paid her fine instead of the whipping. On 17 Feb 1667, Miles Gray disowned Ann Gray as his wife. She had a bastard child and he left her to the law. On 27 Oct 1668, Ann Toft paid 500 lbs of tobacco for her (Acc Co Orders, 1666-70, pp. 21, 51, & 60). Also on 27 Oct 1668, Miles Gray, who had fathered a bastard child by Hannah Leach who was one of Ann Toft's servants, paid Ann Toft a fine of 1500 lbs of tobacco (Acc Co Orders, 1666-70, f. 20). In 1669, Jane the wife of Robert Hill who had formerly been appointed whipper for a year, was ordered to "some time in each month Jane Hill shall go to the house of Mrs. Ann Toft and likewise to all other houses where the like order shall be given, and that the sheriff or deputy see that Jane Hill do with a fitting whip give unto John Hancock, Ann Gray, Adam Rocinson and Penelope Stafford twenty lashes on their bare backs soundly laid on, and this is to be continued for a year, once in each month" " If you look at Group 4 of our Hancock Project, which is my group, you will see that one of the DNA matches is with a fellow named GRAY whose ancestor is Miles Gray. This means that John Hancock of that record above is related to my Hancock line. One interesting thing is that some of my Craven Co., NC ancestors came from Accomack, VA and the Jane Hill who did the whipping is one of my ancestors. Her granddaughter, Ann Hill (daughter of Richard Hill) married Evan Jones and their daughter, Tamar Jones married my James Hancock. Now to a strange thing. I have often wondered where they got the name Miles. Note that is was 200 years after that affair in Accomack Co., VA. Coincidence? I don't know. 1. [HANCOCK] The interesting thing that DNA has found for me.
    2. My ancestor, Nancy Gray b.c1810 of Currituck Co., NC married Daniel Burfoot Lindsey and they moved to Mississippi by 1850 and then to Prairie Co., Arkansas by 1860. My ancestor Frederick W. Hancock b.1808 moved from Craven Co., NC to Mississippi by 1850 and then to Prairie Co., Arkansas by 1860. Their children Matilda D. Lindsey and William Henry Hancock were married in Prairie Co., Arkansas in 1865 and named their first son, Miles Daniel Hancock and the second son, Gaston Gray Hancock. I have often wondered where they got the name Miles. Note that is was 200 years after that affair in Accomack Co., VA. Coincidence? I don't know. Could Nancy Gray of Currituck be descended from Miles Gray and really be a Hancock? I don't know. Nancy's father was Thomas Gray and his father was Joseph Gray, both of Currituck, NC. I can't get back father in that line. Julia

    2. Sue, all the files that were posted on the DNA Project were posted by me and are, on my computer. Neither of those names are in my files. They must have been posted on this Hancock list and if so, would be in our archives. No, I don't have Bill or Arvil's email address. Julia In a message dated 2/4/2013 3:27:18 P.M. 2. Sue, I have sent an email to all the members of the Hancock Project reminding them that they can, always, enter their own ancestor on the page and upload a GEDCOM if they want others to see their line. If you want your data there, you can add it. The email will go to Henry Grady Hancock III if he is a member of the Project. All members should know their Kit number and know how to log into their accounts at the company and should keep up to date. There are new tests to order as well as upgrades to tests. 3. I have the Marshall-Hancock information from VA. I have had it for 3-4 years, but I only recently was able to get a computer allowed me to read that information. I also have some additional Hancock information from the same source. I have not yet processed that information to determine what it contains. I think my Marshalls were in Charles City County VA first and later in Brunswick County, VA. They moved only a few miles across the VA line into NC. My Hancocks were in Chesterfield County, VA. I think Samuel Hancock was my relative but, I am not sure. My John Hancock who originated in SC, probably Edgefield County and his father John Hancock of SC and possibly from VA are my ancestors. My John Hancock lived in Talbot County, GA. His father John Hancock and his two brothers Oliver & James Hancock lived in Talbot County, GA. The older John Hancock's sister-in-law, Martha Oliver Hancock also lived in Talbot County, GA. The older John Hancock's nephew, Bennett Hancock also lived in Talbot County, GA. My John Hancock married Margaret Louisa Marshall in Talbot County, GA in 1841. Margaret Louisa Marshall was the daughter of David Marshall and Frances A. Stewart of Jones County, GA and Talbot County, GA. That was my brick wall for over 30 years. Suddenly, David Marshall has a father an mother. The father was David Marshal, and he married Rebecca Baker in Warren Co. NC in1793. Someone in New Orleans had researched this and found it. There are a lot of Marshalls in Warren County and Halifax County, NC. I already have that research. One of the Halifax County, NC Marshalls lived about 10 miles from my John Hancock in Talbot County, GA. I have tried very hard to make a connection to him because of something my mother said. She said, "I went to the Marshall house (William B. Marshall) with my parents when I was 8 years old (1923)" My mother said that her mother, Lizzie Lou Hancock Kersey called the old man who lived in the house, "Uncle" That has baffled me for many years becaus! e there was no way he could have been an uncle. If indeed my David Marshall is related to William B . Marshall, they would be second or third cousins. I am still working on my male Hancock cousins to do the DNA. Maybe someday. I have been reading with great interest about William Brown and Lucy Simmons of Jones County, GA. I have tried to make a connection there, but I don't think there is a connection. Here is what I know on the Browns of Jones County, GA and the Simmons of Hancock County, GA, Jones County, GA and possibly Crawford County, GA. My Brown was Bazel Brown. His parents were William Brown & Elizabeth Hammack of Hancock County, GA. There are many references that say it was Elizabeth Simmons. Her sister Catherine, married William Simmons. They lived in Jones County, GA. After Elizabeth's husband, William Brown was killed during the 1812 war in TN, she came back from TN and lived next door to William Simmons and her sister Catherine, Hammack Simmons. After William Simmons died about 1828, Catherine and Elizabeth moved to Crawford County and/or Upson County, GA. Thank you for all the work you have done on the Hancocks. ------------------------------- Join our DNA Project at: http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Hancock (Scroll down to place your order) ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to HANCOCK-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message ------------------------------- Join our DNA Project at: http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Hancock (Scroll down to place your order) ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to HANCOCK-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. Thank you for letting me know that information. My sister and I have never researched the Bakers because we did not know we needed to so. My sister has been spending many hours at the GA Archives recently. Their schedule for the public is only 2 days a week, but the remaining staff are working extremely hard, and they are putting out a great deal of new information which had been stored in the Archives building. Each of the 5 remaining staff has to work 6 days a week. They all work on different days. Although the staff is reduced, they are very helpful for those who need help. They cannot give each person prolonged help unless you contact them ahead of your scheduled visit so that they can have everything ready when you get there. There are a great many new DAR books available now. The GA Law books have been placed out in the open area so that the public can use them if there are needed. 2. Sue, only the "Most Distant Ancestor" is posted. The company website is not clickable. I have no idea abut Henry Grady and Richard Clem. Julia In a message dated 2/3/2013 9:36:24 P.M. Please remind me which group number contains Henry Grady Hancock and Richard Clem Hancock.
