Julia, My Great Grandfather was Eli F Hancock born 1809 in N.C. He went from there to Wilson County Tennessee and then to Lamar County Texas. From the research I have done I think that his father was Rev John Hancock. I have one brother still living and I think he would be willing to do DNA. Can you tell me how to do that and about how much it would cost. I would also like to know how the DNA charts work and what I might be able to learn from doing this. Thanks, Deloris Hancock email dahancock@att.net -----Original Message----- From: JULIAFWOOD@aol.com Sent: Wednesday, February 06, 2013 7:42 AM To: hancock@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [HANCOCK] Hoping that all is well. Hi Lisa, I can't find my book on North Carolina Soldiers in the Revolution. Were there more than one John Hancock listed in Craven County? I ask because the one listed next to James Hancock (my ancestor) is John Hancock of Carteret County, NC. He lived long enough to draw a pension from Carteret. He states that his brother, (James), kept a journal (I wish I had that) and that another brother who lives in Wake County (William was in Wake County along with, James' son, Robert) has the family bible. (I wish I had that, too). Julia In a message dated 2/4/2013 10:21:44 P.M. Central Standard Time, lisacraven@northstate.net writes: Lea, I'll send the info I have on Samuel later this week. Greetings Audrey, Using the Family Record data from the Hancock Group 3 Website I drew a Hierarchy Diagram for the Descendants of Benjamin Hancock. If all the Family Record data is accurate, we can make the following observations. The DYS 449 mutation to 27, in the line of Capt. John Adams Hancock most likely occurred downline from his son John Alexander Hancock. In the downline of Capt. John Adams Hancock's son Henry Graves Hancock there is a DYS 607 mutation to 14 as seen in the Y-DNA data of 11050, Marion Watson Hancock. It would be interesting to confirm that 21523, Robert Lee Hancock also has this same DYS 607 mutation. He has not tested for 37 markers. The Line of Joseph Hancock shows neither of these mutations in the data of 192813, Thomas Hunter Hancock. The Line of Austin Hancock shows neither of these mutations in the data of 15362, Calvin Ward Hancock. Hancock's connection is unknown. And, #8906 (desc/o Capt. John Hancock) and N79650 (desc/o Capt. John Hancock) carry a mutation on DYS449, when all the others descendants, as well as other participants in Chart 3, do not have this mutation. This is interesting as one brother's descendant has the common marker and another brother's descendants has the mutation, being children of (Capt.) John Hancock & Nancy A. Graves. Apparently mutations can occur among siblings, or does this indicate something else of significance? Hi Julia, What I see in Group 3 is that we have 8 participants, Kit Number 8902, 8899, 10903, 21523, 11139, 32682, 76203, and 119362, that match 25/25. If they upgraded to 37 markers we would have a higher probability of determining more accurately how closely they are related to the other participants in Group 3. In Group 3 the modal value for DYS 607 is 15. However, two participants 11050, and 249962 have a one step mutation to 14 on DYS 607. Are there others of the 8 who also have this mutation? Are there other characteristic markers within that group of 8 participants? We won't know unless we run the Test. Hi Raymond. With all due respect, the tip is useless. I have 8 DNA Projects with over 2000 members over a span of 11 years and can tell you from that experience that some males' DNA mutates more often than others. Some have perfect matches on 67 markers but their common ancestor is more than ten generations away. Some have many mutations but their proven ancestor is only a few generations away. You can not make general statements about distance if you haven't seen a person's DNA and compared them to matching DNA. Look at Group 1 in the Hancock Project. Most of their mutations are in the first 25 Markers, so the second set of 37 markers didn't help at all. Other are the opposite. DNA doesn't lend itself to general statements. Mutations occur at random, meaning anytime at any place on the STRs. And they are, always, between a father and son. Julia In a message dated 2/5/2013 12:52:29 P.M. A 37/37 match indicates with a 90% probability that participants share a Common Ancestor within the past 4 generations. We have a recent example in Group 3 of the value of upgrading to 37 markers. 15362, Calvin Ward Hancock recently upgraded from 25 to 37 markers. The data shows that he has a 37/37 match with 192813, Thomas Hunter Hancock. Their 37/37 match indicates with a 90% probability that that they share a Common Ancestor within the past 4 generations. This greatly aids in the search for the identity of the Common Ancestor. Julia assures me it has never been on the Hancock DNA chart. I finally figured it out. In 2005 and 2006, Bill Felknor (spelled "nor" as opposed to "ner") shared a lot of material with me. I know you were once in touch with Bill. If you don't have the entire genealogy record dating back to Robert b. 1711 in VA, I do and will be happy to share it with you. You will need to send me your address offline so I can mail everything to you. There's a lot of paperwork. Bill Felknor only has documentation going back to Robert b. 1711 in VA. He speculates that your line goes all the way back to William, born about 1580 in England, but your DNA will be the only proof of that speculation. I even think there's reason to believe your line may be kin to my line. There's a lot of overlap in our families, so your DNA test results will be of great interest to me. There are lots of Hancocks here in the area where I live in Newport News VA., only about 30 miles from Jamestown. There were lots of Hancocks who were born and lived and died right here in this area who were related to his line if he did, in fact, exist. My line of the family migrated into the Carolinas and into Alabama and then into TX. My grandfather/mother then moved to California and had 3 kids, my father, Henry Grady Hancock,Jr born in Long Beach, a son, Richard Clem Hancock born in Ojai and a daughter born in Los Angeles (who is currently living in Myrtle Creek, OR). I was born in Bend, OR but was raised in CA. I joined the Army in 1977 and traveled the world and ultimately ended up here in Virginia right back here where William and so many of his descendants lived. What a great story I could tell my grandkids (of which I have 5), that I brought my family back full circle to VA where it all began. Audrey, thank you for the information concerning the personal settings on the DNA site. I have just gone into the site, and for my husband's test (11757) which is the Hector Hancock line, the parameters are set to match any surname. I also uploaded a gedcom file for his line with about 12,000 names connected to his family. It only took 5 minutes- thank you for suggesting it. Hopefully, there will be a breakthrough at some point. To Becky- no further luck with the Hector Hancock line to report. We'll keep looking! Becky, http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Hancock/default.aspx?section=ycolorized When looking at this FT DNA Chart you will see that Hector is 11757 and carries I2b1 a completely different haplogroup identification than all the other Hancocks listed and tested. This appears to mean to me that there was a significant event in his line as it stands right now: adoption taking adoptive family's name, taking a mother's maiden name if someone in the line was illegitimate, back in time his ancestors took or adopted the HANCOCK name (alias), or other event. It would appear that he may match with another family surname. On the testees personal DNA site the parameters probably need to be set to Match with All Testees. Julia, There had to be more than one John Hancock in Craven County. My guess is that he was there with some part of his family, much in the same situation as his brother Samuel who was in GA learning a trade from his uncle. Since their dad died when they were young, it would make sense that different parts of the family was helping with them. The John that enlisted in Craven County is the brother of Samuel, and son of John and Martha Hancock. Samuel and John had a brother William and a sister Ann. Her son, William Henry Hancock, learned the pottery trade from his neighbor Jacob Craven. About 1880, William moved to Fayetteville NC where he worked for the famed potter, Edgar Allen Poe. William was one of the first potters at Poe & Co. William's son, John William Hancock b 1865 also practiced the art of potter. Today any piece of their pottery is worth quite a lot of money Lisa is that Craven any kin to you?

Raymond, And, yet, other connected testees of # 11050 (Henry Graves Hancock) and # 249962 (Isom M. Hancock) do not carry this mutation. These: #11050 (the above mentioned) and #8906, #N79650, #15362, #12734, and #192813 are all descendants of Benjamin Hancock & Mary "Polly" Beadles. Isom M. Central Standard Time, RKelly6704@verizon.net writes: Greetings Julia, You can easily verify the accuracy of my statement using the TiP Calculator on your Matches page. A 25/25 match indicates with a 90% probability that participants share a Common Ancestor within the past 10 generations. Most of us don't have paper trails going back 10 generations. I do appreciate all your help in advance. Was there a William Hancock that came through Jamestown in 1619 and was killed in the indian uprising at the Berkley Plantation in 1622? Hi Audrey, I do believe that I am a part of that group. I am trying to digest what I do know and the new material I just received so I will get back to you Carolyn Krodell Fayetteville AR -----Original Message----- From: hancock-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:hancock-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Audrey Shields Hancock Sent: Wednesday, February 06, 2013 7:40 AM To: hancock@rootsweb.com Subject: [HANCOCK] Attention: Chart 3 Group Possible Connections Hello, Researchers of Chart 3 DNA FAMILY, If you are researching or believe there is a family connection with your ancestor of any members in the Chart 3 DNA family, I would like to create a webpage listing the believed connection along with the name and e-mail of the researcher. Lisa & Helene believe that John "J" Hancock connects to the same line as Isham Hancock, so it would be nice to show that possible connection as we try to resolve where that person might fit in. So, if you find yourself researching a connection to this group, please send me the lineage you are working on, and perhaps some connections can be found in time. However, we know that unless someone is tested, there is no real way to validate that that person has the DNA of a Chart 3 Hancock. In my own projects, men have learned that somewhere in their ancestry there was a significant event that changed their paternity...adoption, bastardy where the child took the mother's maiden name or the name of her husband/step-father at the time, or etc. There have been brothers who tested who learned they have different fathers; cousins who tested who learned their DNA didn't match. So, even if someone else in a family tested, until one is tested, we can never be sure. Hi Audrey, I just went looking for Bob Hopkins on the Internet and found a lot of people complaining that his work was full of errors. One message was from me where I said that we had to disable the link to his pages when we were constructing the World Hancock Project because of all the complains that we received about what he had posted. I did find a page about the Corn line that connects to his Hancock and seem to remember that line seemed to be correct into Franklin County, Tennessee. There have been no postings from Bob in several years. Julia In a message dated 2/6/2013 7:47:55 A.M. Hello, Researchers of Chart 3 DNA FAMILY, If you are researching or believe there is a family connection with your ancestor of any members in the Chart 3 DNA family, I would like to create a webpage listing the believed connection along with the name and e-mail of the researcher.
