Thank you for the response. I had thought that was probably what had happened at an earlier time. It turns out that the Marshall relative was probably a 2nd or 3rd cousin. Probably at an earlier time, that people were not able to figure those distinctions, so they just called people Aunt or Uncle. Thank you Mary. -----Original Message----- From: WEARLY <WEARLY@aol.com> To: hancock <hancock@rootsweb.com> Sent: Fri, Feb 15, 2013 5:41 pm Subject: Re: [HANCOCK] Margaret Louisa Marshall Hancock In my family adults in the family were called Aunt/Uncle. One of the Halifax County, NC Marshalls lived about 10 miles from my John Hancock in Talbot County, GA. I have tried very hard to make a connection to him because of something my mother said. She said, "I went to the Marshall house (William B. His parents were William Brown & Elizabeth Hammack of Hancock County, GA. There are many references that say it was Elizabeth Simmons. Her sister Catherine, married William Simmons. They lived in Jones County, GA. After Elizabeth's husband, William Brown was killed during the 1812 war in TN, she came back from TN and lived next door to William Simmons and her sister Catherine, Hammack Simmons. Teresa & Julia: I spent several hours yesterday going thru this new lineup on Familytree Hancocks. I picked up that for whatever reason, your John R. was put in the last grouping. As you and I both know, ours lines are identical on all 25 markers; thus he should be in our group, the Joel's of GA. Also, if you notice, the William Hancock b. 1763 VA, which before was in our group, has been moved down to the last grouping. Personally, I feel this is more correct. If you look close at his markers, he's off by 5 per my calculations in the first 25. So, where does he belong or am I wrong here? Is there something that I need to do? Also, if I am wondering about going to the 37 marker or higher? Hi Deloris, I did miss this email, sorry. I can't quote prices on the Rootsweb.com list but if you go to the "Join" page and scroll down, you will see all the prices. http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Hancock If your brother matches any other Hancock or Group of Hancocks his test will be placed in that Group and you will can see and compare genealogy to, hopefully, further your research. Hi Lisa, I can't find my book on North Carolina Soldiers in the Revolution. Were there more than one John Hancock listed in Craven County? I ask because the one listed next to James Hancock (my ancestor) is John Hancock of Carteret County, NC. He lived long enough to draw a pension from Carteret. He states that his brother, (James), kept a journal (I wish I had that) and that another brother who lives in Wake County (William was in Wake County along with, James' son, Robert) has the family bible. (I wish I had that, too). Julia In a message dated 2/4/2013 10:21:44 P.M. Central Standard Time, lisacraven@northstate.net writes: Lea, I'll send the info I have on Samuel later this week. Teresa, I don't know what is going on with your father's results. I did have him in Group 3 and noticed that he had 10 mutations from the rest of that Group and thought that I had made a mistake in putting him in Group 3, so I removed him. Now, when I use the tool that the company provides for us to match each test, it says that he matches Group 3, but when I put him back in Group 3 he had too many mutations from that Group. I will have to ask the company what is going on and let you know. He is in Group 3, now, so look at what I mean. http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Hancock/default.aspx?section=ycolorized Julia In a message dated 2/10/2013 7:52:29 A.M. Lisa, I still haven't found the book but the index is online and there are only three John Hancock in North Carolina. One applied for a pension in Montgomery County, NC. One is the heir of Isaac Hancock and the third is John of Craven and Carteret, the son of James Hancock and Tamar Jones. He applied for and received a pension. In it he states that he was born in Craven County, NC on 14 October 1763. When called into service, he lived in Craven County, NC and continued to reside there until he removed to Carteret County, NC in 1787 and where he now resides (1833). He married Elizabeth Shepard who died in 1799 and then married her sister, Hannah Shepard who applied for a pension after John died in Jones County, NC on 24 February 1838. His brother, James, served with him. They both joined at the same time in New Bern and their voucher numbers are only 2 numbers apart. He isn't the brother of Samuel. As you, probably, know. James Hancock, Sr. deed land to his four sons William, Roger, James and John and where they sold that land they were called William of Craven, Roger of Craven, James of Jones and John of Carteret. My guess is that he was there with some part of his family, much in the same situation as his brother Samuel who was in GA learning a trade from his uncle. Since their dad died when they were young, it would make sense that different parts of the family was helping with them. The John that enlisted in Craven County is the brother of Samuel, and son of John and Martha Hancock. Samuel and John had a brother William and a sister Ann.
