Bev, I wasn't going to tell you this story about S C but since you asked I guess it will be all right - another example of why I tend to dis-believe some of his genealogy. I think this started as another grandmother Hamrick story. David McSwain b 1700, Isle of Skye, came over with Hans Georg on the Snow Lawther in 1731. This David was reported to be buried in the McSwain Graveyard as the first white man who died in Rutherford County. A monument was erected to this some years later. SC was on the committee of three who owned the cemetery at the time and had cause to erect the monument. David's children were those McSwain's who moved to Rutherford County and son David married Susannah Hamrick. This story like the Hamrick tale was believed until January of this year 1999. David McSwain was taxed in Lancaster county, PA in 1740. He was not taxed thereafter. In March 1741, just over the state border in Baltimore County, Maryland David Jr's mother bound him out until 21 as was done when a parent died. After he was released from his apprenticeship he married and the children he had with Susannah Hamrick were recorded in the registry of the Church in Baltimore County, Maryland. However the spouse on the marriage license and the church registry was "Jones". Her sister who married Gabriel Washburn was also a Jones and not a McSwain as S C recorded it. These Jones girls were S C's ancestors. So he did write about the Jones family, he just had the names confused like he did with another family. I am related to S C through his McKinney grandmother. He reported the McKinney marriages and children correctly. J R To: hamrick@home.com Subject: Re: S C Jones Dear JR, Since you're related to SC Jones, why didn't he write a book about the Jones's? Bev
