    1. [HAMRICK-L] Hamrick/Daniel relationship
    2. More "facts" to prove the newspaper article/obituary about Dot Deloris HAMRICK Hancock may be in error: The line from the obituray, Cullman Tribune, 6 Jan 00, in question: > "Dot's great uncle, Jack Daniels, a Cherokee Indian, founded the >Tennessee Distillery, even though most of his Alabama kin are tee-totlers." > We just did some quick checking (on the internet, so the data may or may not be accurate of course): The Jack Daniels Distillery in Lynchburg, TN is celebrating Mr. Jack's 150th birthday in 2000. Even though I've never claimed to be a great math student, I do believe that would indicate that Mr. Jack was born in 1850. From my Tennessee history, I don't recall him having children (does anyone know if he ever married? I can't find it); the distillery has stayed in the family but through one of his brother's lines. Anyway, based on distillery data on the internet, Mr. Jack was born in 1850. Burt Daniel, the great uncle (by marriage) of Dot Deloris Hamrick Hancock, was born circa 1850 (just like Mr. Jack). Burt DANIEL married Nancy Jane HAMRICK on 21 Dec 1870 in Cleburne County, AL; she was born circa 1852 (based on the 1870 Cleburne County, AL census). Nancy Jane Hamrick Daniel is buried at Mars Hill Cemetery in Cleburne County, AL; she died in 1884. There is one really interesting fact about Mr. Jack Daniel as it relates to the HAMRICK family. Jack's "real" name was Jasper Newton Daniel. Newton is a common middle name in our Hamrick line - found in several different generations, always as a middle name. Nancy Jane Hamrick's father was James Newton Hamrick (who married Lucy Ann DUKE). In the Duke line there are three Newtons - one Newton Jasper Duke b. Dec 1870, Newton Walton Duke b. Feb 1904, and Newton James Duke, b. ca. 1930. I haven't even started on the part of the obituary that Jack Daniel was a Cherokee Indian <G>. Pat motesp@hiwaay.net
