    1. [HAMRICK-L] Eugene Hamrick ancestors
    2. HAMRICK,DANIEL
    3. Dear Cynthia and list: This is the way I have the family of Eugene Hamrick. I have no information on his spouse, your mother, or on any of the children. You can do me and the list a favor by providing it. If there are errors, please report to me at the address at the end. You may be interested to know that because of the work of one of your cousins, Wilton Hamrick, this is one of the most thoroughly researched groups within the Hamrick family. I believe Wilton provided much of the information used in Les Hamrick's "Roots and Wings." Wilton was known for his accuracy. A large group of descendants of Thomas M. and Jane Baughman Hamrick come to the family reunion on Point Mountain, WV, on the fourth weekend in August. This is an ahnentafel chart. To find a father, multiply the person by two. To find a son, divide by two. To find a mother, multiply by two and add one. Thus, Happy Jack's father has the number eight and his mother the number nine. The numbers in the index beside the names are meaningless here. 1 Eugene Hamrick and his ancestors. 2 Elsie Monroe Hamrick. Born on 14 Jul 1903 in Webster County, WV. 2. HAMRICK,DANIEL
    3. Dear Cynthia: Was your great grandfather's nickname John Andrew "Happy Jack" Hamrick, son of "James "Curly Jim" Hamrick and Jane Miller? If so, I can provide information on Happy Jack's ancestors and have only that which you provided on his descendants. If so , we are also related. This one may also bring my cousin and editor, Patsy Hamrick-Weikart, out of the California woodwork, such as woodwork dares exist there. dhamrick@neo.rr.com Dan Hamrick 402 23rd Street NW Canton OH 44709 Phone and fax: 330-454-2376

    1. [HAMRICK-L] A link to Gen. Andrew Lewis?
    2. HAMRICK,DANIEL
    3. This message is being put on the lists but is in answer to a question from Adam Gregory, a student at West Virginia Wesleyan and an acquaintance and relative of mine. (I am dispensing with much attribution here because of the complexity of this material but I will provide what I have to anyone who asks for it. That is, I will furnish my sources). I cannot state factually that I know that you are descended from Gen. Andrew Lewis, a commander in the French and Indian War and in the Battle of Point Pleasant also known as "Dunmore's War." There was an erroneous report posted earlier from some numbskull that he was in the Revolutionary War. But if the accounts of others are correct, you are related by marriage. Gen. Lewis married Elizabeth Given, daughter of Samuel and Sarah Cathay Given, according to the book "General Andrew Lewis of Roanoke and Greenbrier." According to some Hamrick researchers, you are descended from Samuel and Sarah Cathay Given. In that event your connection would be by marriage. The ancestors of nearly all Webster and Randolph Gregorys are descended from Col. Isaac and Sarah Hannah Given Gregory. Sarah Hannah Given descended from William Given and Nancy Agnes Bratton; William Given from John Given and Mary Margaret Sitlington; and John Given from Samuel Given and Sarah Cathay Given. This is how Autumn Kruer has them, although she said she cannot authenticate them. I have them the same way until it gets to Samuel Given and Sarah Cathay Given, where I had nothing. Marie Hamric Stoneman of Eldon, MO, who has researched the family for nearly 50 years, says the latter connection of John Given as the son of Samuel and Sarah is incorrect. You are connected through Nancy Agness Gregory, first wife of my great-grandfather Peter Hamrick. They had nine children including Lee Andrew "Lee A." Hamrick who married Amanda Hannah. Lee A. and Amanda were the parents of six children including a number of very beautiful women including your great grandmother, Lucy, and the twins, Mertie and Gertie. Peter's wife, Nancy, also was the daughter of Adam Given Gregory and Rebecca Dodrill, and he in turn was the son of Col. Isaac and Sarah Hannah Given Gregory. The other connection is through your great-grandfather Frank Gregory, who was related to Lucy before the marriage. If this is shocking, you can join a very large club in West Virginia. Frank was the son of John Wesley Gregory and Jane Hamrick Dodrill. As I've mentioned that made her Jane Hamrick Dodrill Gregory. What's in a name: Intermarriage, again and again. In any event, John Wesley Gregory's parents were Currence Gregory and Harriet Payne. And guess who Currence Gregory's parents were: Adam Given Gregory and Rebecca Dodrill. So one of Lucy's grandmothers was Nancy Agness Gregory, the daughter of Adam Gregory and Rebecca Dodrill . And her husband, Frank Edmiston, your great-grandfather, was the great grandson of the same couple. Now, although I am sorry to visit this grief-laden message on a relatively innocent young man, I must deliver the bad news too: You and I are closely related because my great-grandfather, Peter Hamrick, was Lucy's grandfather. He was your father's great-great grandfather. Autumn Kruer, I think, can connect you to Capt. Robert Bratton, a member of the Lewis and Clark expedition. Because my great-great grandfather was David Hamrick, Peter's father, I always have been able to deny that I had Gregory or Dodrill blood. But I must confess now that I am related to many of them. David had married Elizabeth Miller, while William and Benjamin married sisters who were daughters of Isaac and Sarah Gregory. I would invite your participation in the quest for family history. You have thousands of relatives in West Virginia and throughout the United States. The first thing you should do is become a member of the Gregory email list. Lisa Gregory <wvgregory@erols.com> can help you with that if you have not already become a member. You should know too that the pioneer history of the families (Gregory, Dodrill, Hamrick) is closely intertwined with that of the early days of the Methodist Church. And the Wesleyan Library is reputed to be a great repository of the material. A great contribution to family history could be made if someone could compile the early history of the Hamrick Barn and the Pleasant Grove Methodist Church. I swear that I once saw minutes of early meetings in which some members were expelled from the church for one reason or another. If the early information is correct, you would have more than one connection to the parents of Gen. Andrew Lewis. The reason is that Lucy Gregory's paternal grandmother was Nancy Agness Gregory and her father was Frank Gregory. dhamrick@neo.rr.com Dan Hamrick 402 23rd Street NW Canton OH 44709 Phone and fax: 330-454-2376 ---------- From: "adam gregory" <gregory_ad@wvwc.edu> To: <dhamrick@neo.rr.com> Subject: Date: Tue, Nov 30, 1999, 9:47 PM dan, how do i trace back to this Andrew Lewis? 2. I too get that spelling with my name! Also HAMBRICK, HAMMERICK, HAMMICK and HAMRIC among others and the correct way to spell my name is Christian Mark HAMRICK.

    3. I'm seeking to respond to Bill Davenport without trying to argue. I don't think anyone's mind may not be beset by doubt on the question about various West Virginia Hamricks or, in our case, about Gregorys or Dodrills. One of the great ironies of the intensive and extensive research is that none of us has proof of the parents of the patriarchs, Patrick Hamrick, Col. Isaac Greogry or English Bill Dodrill. I appreciate your own message because I agree that consensus doesn't mean correctness. (In West Virginia, it was until recently an article of faith that Benjamin Hamrick was a scout for Washington from Valley Forge to Yorktown, and it was repeated by relatives. But it was only partially true). People like Mills Bridges, Steve Bridges, Tressie Neely, J.R. McKinney and Allen Hamrick, are greater authorities on North Carolina Hamricks and Hamricks in general than me, a descendant from West Virginia. What I understand the problem to be is that they can, in fact, trace documents through to many of the North Carolina Hamricks. If I'm wrong about this, I stand to be corrected. I do not think any of them or most of the rest of us would be adverse to reading a document that would show the facts and, as best as I know, there has never been a document linking Patrick or "German George" with any location in Europe. We have some documentation on sons of Patrick born before Hans Jerg came to America in 1731. So it is difficult to trace those people to Hans Jerg. But it may not be that difficult to trace others. I for one have maintained the view that the Hans Jerg crew had to have descendants too. One of the questions that does get too little attention: What were the links to the Harmick immigrants who arrived in 1731? Where are they? Who are they? What were the origins, even various origins, of Hamricks in Europe? I have noted that there are Hamricks in Dublin; there are Hamricks in Hamburg; and there are Hamriks in Holland. It is gospel with Charles Hamrick that the family originated in Holland. Mayme Hamrick wrote in 1938 it was England. So we have miles to go before we sleep. Are we not talking about a quest for information? Are we not talking about pursuing different paths? Blind acceptance is acquiescence to dogma, and it is Public Enemy Number One of the truth. I think debate about detail is a part of the process. I say something. You challenge it. If you are correct, I learn something. If you are not, you learn something. I've noticed on various lists I'm on that someone posts something and someone else takes it personally. Sometimes it even is posted initially in a way that is personal. I think we all need to relax more and enjoy the hunt the quest for the truth. When a connection becomes provably true, we can have the smug satisfaction that we helped get there by insistence on the truth and refusing to be diverted from the goal. I for one have no quarrel with North Carolina Hamricks. There are too darn many of them anyway. I thought at one time it was impossible for there to be more Hamricks than there were in Webster County, WV; Rimfire Hamrick claimed 4,000 relatives in the county in his lifetime. Then I saw a list of the Hamricks in Shelby, NC, and I had to acknowledge they had us beat. If the North Carolina and West Virginia Hamricks ever went to war, they'd have to have divisions or legions. Thanks for listening to my latest sermon. Someimes even I wish I were more reverent than irreverent. dhamrick@neo.rr.com Dan Hamrick 402 23rd Street NW Canton OH 44709 Phone and fax: 330-454-2376 ---------- >From: Bill Davenport <davenport@brooksdata.net> >To: HAMRICK-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: [HAMRICK-L] Our German ancestors >Date: Fri, Dec 3, 1999, 10:41 AM > >Good morning > >Until 6 months ago I was unaware of Hamrick kinship. 3. Hi Bill - Nice to hear from you - I'm also descended from the Cleveland/Rutherford Hamricks, and also believe my ancestors were descended from George/German stock. Like you, I place a good amount of faith in the family story-telling through the years. I was only privileged to know up through my grandparents' generation personally, but they were very knowledgable re. their ancestors and shared a great interest in maintaining an oral family history. Also, you mentioned those of us who believe we are descended from Patrick may have been intimidated from posting to the list, just wanted to let you know my silence has more to do with recently having been anticipating the arrival of my own first Hamrick descendant. My particular line of Hamricks have never been prone to intimidation! Hope to hear more from you - would be interested in knowing your own particular lineage. Kathy
