    1. Re: [HAMRICK-L] Joel Hamrick
    2. Dear Patsy, Aren't you being a little, how do I put this, harsh? Caroline wrote, I think, in response to J R's message where he wrote, and I quote: Joel testified in court to document the military service of Benjamin. "I was at home when Benjamin returned from service to marry. He was married in our father's house". Paraphrased. The exact wording can probably be found in Benjamin's Pension Application along with other testimony if you wish to write for it. Joel apparently thought he was Benjamin's brother and may have been best man at the weeding although he did not testify to it. End of quote. Like Caroline, my first thought was just what was J R quoting from (that he put in quotes but the word "paraphrased" after). And J R suggested that anyone interested in the exact working should request a copy of Benjamin's pension application. And from the way I read Caroline's message, that's all she was doing....asking if anyone had a copy of the pension application with the exact wording. But, Patsy, you are right. You have no reason to share your copy. I'm sure no one on the list has ever shared any information with you. It's times like these that make me almost glad I can't trace my husband's HAMRICK line back to West Virginia! Maybe it's a good thing they are stuck in Georgia <G>. To Tressie, J R, et al, thank you for being so willing to share with those of us who do not have the resources (and in some of our cases, time) to discover and analyze all the data available. Some of us have never seen the books of Charles T. Doddrill, Mayme Hamrick, S. C. Jones, Les Hamrick, Jr., or Hamrick Tales. By the same token, some of us have been totally confused by the errors (intentional or not) found in the above-mentioned books. Once again I will ask if anyone has ever found any evidence (or proof or even a hard clue) that Robert S. HAMRICK had a middle name of Signor (I have never found a document with this middle name but family tradition is firm about this!) or that his mother's maiden name was Margaret SIGNAR. To refresh everyone's memory, Robert S. was born 19 Oct 1800 and died after the 1850 census but before the 1860 census. He married Margaret Elizabeth (Betsy) SMITH on 27 Jun 1821 in Jasper County, GA. All indications are that his father was James HAM(B)RICK who died leaving a Coweta County, GA will dated May 1834. Robert S. was the brother of Seaburn, Susan, Harrison, Eliza, Maria, Nancy, Martha, and James. I would like to suggest that all of us (including and especially me), since we seem to have a common goal, strive to exercise a little tact in the year 2000. Caroline's message could have been a tad more tactful. Patsy's message, as I've already stated, seemed a little harsh. And mine, of course, is more sarcastic than I originally intended. Incidently, "in our father's house" could have meant that Joel was married in a church - not necessarily that Joel and Benjamin were brothers. That's a common southern expression - although we do tend to capitalize the "f" in Father in that case. I don't know about the West Virginia Hamricks, but many of the Georgia Hamricks were Baptist (to include our Robert S. who was a Baptist preacher) - and that's an expression many of my Baptist friends and relatives use. Ask some one that you trust and applaud for integrity. I am sure some of these experts on Hamrick history will have the document laying around. 3. In answer to JR 's note at the end of his reply regarding Joel may have been best man at Benjamin's weeding (wedding). The marriage record was never found as a document of proof - only Joesph stating "he thinks they were married in the fall of 1779." In the statement by JR above he is assuming a wedding took place with Joel as best man - Maybe we should not assume what took place for stories start that way. Applaud the true researchers for accurate facts. Patsy On Sat, 1 Jan 2000 23:27:27 -0500 "AutumnLKruer" <AutumnK@prodigy.net> writes: > Oops! Well, I screwed up! 3. First, and foremost, as old Maw & Paw Hamrick used to say, "If you don't have nothing good to day about anybody, don't say nothing at all." I do have something to say: I purchased the books of Charles T. Doddrill, Mayme Hamrick, S. C. Jones, Les Hamrick, Jr., Hamrick Tales publications, census records, legal documents, etc., containing Hamrick information. I'm feel very fortunate that I did. I realize it is fairly easy to keep track of one's own line of Hamricks but it becomes extremely complex to sort out individuals as you branch out and "unintentional" errors do occur. I applaud the above persons, as well as folks like J. R. McKinney and Tressie Neely, who share their data in an attempt to enhance our Hamrick heritage research and appreciate the hard work they have done. Now, with all of that said... Does anyone have a copy of the Benjamin Hamrick's pension papers. I am seeking a copy of the paper to see the exact wording where Joel Hamrick was mentioned. Thanks in advance for any help. 2. Patsy H Weikart
    3. I was not offended at all on Dan opinion - the old saying goes " that you can't believe half of what you read or hear" - that is a true statement. If you read a magazine or newspaper article and there is a error in the information then the company will print an apology and correction. I have talked to Les many times and mailed him information on my immediate family which he didn't include my granddaughters in the book and numerous errors on dates, names(my sisters wrong) etc. When he was told about the problem it seemed he could care less - to this day there was no correction made and I think he should have printed up an insert to the book with corrections and data he had received in plenty of time but didn't include in book. In my opinion Les was in a big hurry to get out a book because he talked about doing one for a long time and the contents (no reference source) was a hurry up job. A book is not much good based on hear say unless you have references to back up - even a library does not want to accept one as a donation with no source of references. One of my least favorite authors has been Charles Dodrill of book he printed with no reliable source - I have checked the few references he used in the beginning and they didn't exist and the life William Earl and Rebecca was a tale of fiction... If something is worth doing then it should be done correctly - not a hurry up job just to brag that I done a book. I purchased about five books from Les and hope some day he will correct his records - even Don Norman makes corrections if you send him the additional material. Some one on the web has my mother's age about twelve years older then she was - I don't know how to correct that mistake but there are a lot of people that has copied that date and have their records wrong - the legacy we leave for the future should be right and when you are told its wrong then something should be done to make right. Dan and myself stress every day the important of documents and reference source to all genealogy - especially when submitting for public use. This is my opinion -what good is a thousand names if 999 is not correct - who wants hear -say in their files. If you ever want to join an organization you will not get far on a family story. Family stories are fine and entertaining but unless you can proof that great uncle was a Major I would not write his name as such and swear its true. I know that many on the list will not agree with me but that is how I stand on my principles. If I tell you something regarding genealogy even if its not the answer you would like hear - you can believe that its been checked out and research done on my answer not some ones opinion. We all need to learn from each other - we are cousins and have the same goal -learning about our ancestors. Maybe they are laughing at our antics! Anyway, I don’t have record of J R ever getting back to me on this question, so I am going to resubmit it to him, and to the board in general. She is clearly mentioned in the will, but I had no record of her prior to that, either. She is mentioned along with all the other 7 children, so it isn’t a nickname for one of the other girls. I’m leaving her in my database and will see what everyone else has to offer. Happy New Year - one to tell our “descendants” about!! Jane ----------------

    3. Dan and all Ham(b)ricks, Thank you for your letter with corrections. The computer in front of me is where I receive mail. Beside it, 6 inches away, is another computer and keyboard that has the Ham(b)rick file. It takes a few seconds to read your letter saying your ancestor is Daniel Stoffer and not David until the correction is made. At the end of the day, it takes me about 20 minutes to reload the updated data to the internet. However when you say that the birth dates are incorrect and I am missing several children and do not tell me what the correct data is -- the bad data is unchanged. Aunt Ruth listed age 94 in 1997 and also listed as born in 1906 I still am unable to correct because I do not know which is right. Your final statement "I abhor the possibility that the misinformation can be perpetuated". I completely agree with you and stand ready to correct the misinformation. When I try to correct the misinformation that my cousin Steven Collis Jones produced in North Carolina, I am cursed by the true German believers. However for anyone anywhere else in the Ham(b)rick family I am sitting here ready to make additions and corrections all day every day and most all night as long as I have corrections I can make. I abhor the fact that that there are errors and missing data in the Ham(b)rick file and those who know the correct data do not write and tell me. I am old and feeble and make mistakes but I will keep trying until I get it correct as long as you keep sending me corrections and tell me where there are errors. If Les Hamrick has errors in his book and you do not want them perpetuated, this is your opportunity to correct them. These are your family and your data. All I am is your steno. Tell me what you want the data to say and it will say it. Please, Please, Please make your New Years Resolution to get the data correct in your family file and sit down once a week and keep sending in corrections until it is correct. I also would like to have references and documentation on every one, service records, battles fought, census records, deeds, pensions, obits, tall tales, accomplishments, awards, Nobel Prize Winners, Books Authored, occupations, Universities founded, geographic sites named, where buried, where married, where eloped, where educated, inventions made, and any other significant event in your ancestors life. If YOU do not send it in, it will not be there. J R Hamrick Hambrick Genealogy at: http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com

    2. HAMRICK,DANIEL
    3. Dear J.R.: You web site undoubtedly is the largest compilation published on Hamrick family history ever. It is impressive in its scale and you are to be commended. But I want to sound some cautions to that portion of the West Virginia family history that relates to descendants of Benjamin Hamrick and Nancy McMillian. The book is riddled with errors, lacks attributions and sources. It appears you have followed Les Hamrick's "Roots and Wings" on my own family line complete with its multitude of errors. Les Hamrick and his principal researcher, Beverly Hamrick Kenney, are friends of mine. I've told them about the errors. Unlike the Jones' book on Carolina Hamricks, Les Hamrick was fair at family line connections but deplorable with facts, the ability to use judgment about sources and to cite any attribution or sourcing at all. I told Les he needed an editor. I have known Les Hamrick well for six years. My own biography has eight sentences and four errors. Les never took a note in my presence, even though we discussed my own life frequently. And the obvious factual errors make the book extremely risky if you are quoting facts. There are so many errors it is useless to recount them. For example, my grandfather, son of Peter, was Daniel Stoffer, not David. He lists four children of Daniel Stoffer and Rosa Riggleman. There were seven, and I provided them to Les and to you. Daniel and Rosa could not have had two sons born in 1908, my father and a brother, listed a month apart. My aunt Ruth, in the book, was listed in 1997 as 94 years old and, at the same time, was listed as having been born in 1906. My great-great grandmother, Elizabeth Miller Hamrick, was the daughter of Francis Miller, not John Miller, one of the first settlers and brother of Francis. Both did have daughters named Elizabeth. I could go on for most of the day. There are those who say, "Well, Les did contribute connections in some family lines that had not been connected previously." That is probably true. But there is little accuracy in those he did. Many of the errors are of the type that could have been caught by a good proofreader. It simply is unfortunate that the information was not shared with anyone, let alone a good editor and I don't mean me. I simply abhor the possibility that the misinformation can be perpetuated. dhamrick@neo.rr.com Dan Hamrick 402 23rd Street NW Canton OH 44709 Phone and fax: 330-454-2376 ---------- >From: "Hamrick" <hamrick@home.com> >To: HAMRICK-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: [HAMRICK-L] New Hamrick Listing >Date: Mon, Dec 20, 1999, 7:06 AM > >Hamricks! > >I awakened this AM at 3:30 and could not go back to sleep >so decided to read my mail. > >My first letter was from James Hamrick who told me he had >put his GEDCOM of many years of Hamrick research on the >worldconnect site.
