    1. [HAMRICK-L] JOHN HAMBRICK?

    3. I would appreciate the help of list members in identifying the parents of John Hambrick of Jessamine County, Kentucky. I received by postal mail an inquiry from Josephine W. Graham of Rainbow, Texas, and will quote her questions. She lists her phone number as 254-897-4542, and I feel rather certain she would not mind a telephone call on this subject: "I recently received a newsletter about the Hamrick Family. I am very pleased there are so many people involved with their roots. "I have been searching off and on for about 20 years. My mother was a Hambrick. I hae been able to trace this family to JOHN HAMBRICK OF Jessamine County, KY, where he married Elizabeth "Betsy" Isabel in 1812. I cannot find any proof of either of their parents. "It has been suggested that Jesse Hambrick of Scott County, Kentucky, was John's father but the researcher's theory was only using the marriage date, March 3, 1790, of Jesse and Lydia and the fact that the census says John was born in 1790. . . "He also suggested that Elizabeth Isabel's father was Joel. He did not give me any clues as to why he chose that name or where he found Joel Isabel. ". . .I was wondring: Does your organization (Pioneer Family History Preservation Society Inc., a group rooted in Hamrick history) have anyone who could check your database to see if you have any information on "my" John Hambrick of Jessamine County, KY?" 2. Isn't that odd, I don't get porn messages on my screen name either, but my children get lots, and I don't use chat rooms either. Last year there was a service on AOL that was a "junk mail" filter. I requested it and immediately stopped receiving all ads and porn. It was supposed to apply to all screen names but it didn't stop the mail on other names. Now I regularly forward porn mail to AOL's e-mail address TOSSPAM with a note that my daughter is only 14. I'm going to keep doing this until they get some control over it

    3. Although I do my email and other work at Prodigy, I do maintain a $4.95 account at AOL to keep up with their genealogy bulletin board and its queries. For over a year I felt that I was diseased, or had caught a virus, or was branded with a Scarlet A, because of the burdensome and bothering amount of porn messages coming into my AOL mail box. But by the recent messages here on Hamrick, it seems that this is a common problem for AOL users. Is this correct? If so, the knowledge of this problem is a great relief to me, now realizing that I am not necessarily a Biblical leper. The next question is, how can you stop it ? Archie

    2. I keep a main screen name and my children have separate names under my main AOL acct. I don't get porn messages but they get numerous ones. The only difference I can come up with is I don't go into chat rooms. They change their screen names often, but the porn seems to follow. B Barnes

    3. Some of you have probably seen this before. I haven't seen it in awhile. It's FAR too true, though..... Murphy's Law of Genealogy (Author Unknown) The public ceremony in which your distinguished ancestor participated and at which the platform collapsed under him turned out to be a hanging. When at last, after much hard work, you have solved the mystery you have been working on for two years, when your aunt says, "I could have told you that". You grandmother's maiden name that you have searched for over four years was on a letter in a box in the attic all the time. You never asked your father about his family when he was alive because you weren't interested in genealogy then. The last will and testimate you need is in the safe on board the Titanic. Copies of old newspapers have holes occurring only over the surnames for which you are looking. John, son of Thomas, the immigrant whom your relatives claim as the family progenitor, died on board a ship at age ten. Your great grandfather's newspaper obituary states that he died leaving no issue of record. The keeper of the vital records you need has just been insulted by another genealogist. The relative who had all the family photographs gave them all to her daughter who has no interest in genealogy, and no inclination to share. The only record you find for your great grandfather is that his property was sold at a sheriff's sale for insolvency. The one document that would supply the missing link in your dead-end line has been lost due to fire, flood or war. The town clerk to whom you wrote for the information sends you a long handwritten letter which is totally illegible. The spelling for your European ancestor's name bears no relationship to its current spelling or pronunciation. None of the pictures in your recently deceased grandmother's photo album have names written on them. No one in your family tree ever did anything noteworthy, owned property, was sued or was named in wills. You learn that your great aunt's executor just sold her life's collection of family genealogical materials to a flea market dealer "somewhere in New York City." Ink fades and paper deteriorates at a rate inversely proportional to the value of the data recorded. The thirty-seven volume, sixteen thousand page history of your county of origin isn't indexed. You finally find your great grandparent's wedding records and discover that the brides' father was named John Smith. "genealogy - where you confuse the dead and irritate the living!" 3. Hi. Were your Hambrick's married into the Boynton family? My gg grandmother was Mary Elizabeth "Bettie" Hambrick who was married to Lucious Croyl Screws in TX. Would be very interested on how you trace this family back as I have had so much trouble doing it. 3. Not certain to whom to send this. I just read a letter that commented that the name "hamrick" is probably of Irish or english origin. Mayme Hamrick was a relative and thus the older people in my family had face to face discussions with her and I have a copy of her published book. In her book, she commented that she found no name similar to Hamrick in English or Irish annals. There was a ship however that arrived in Phila PA in 1730 from Rotterdam. The ship was the Snowloather. Aboard this ship were 4 adults all having the name Hamrick. 3 other adults had the same name but with spelling variations. They were believed to have been German. Their names are listed in a book I think titled "The Pennsylvania Germans". The book is in the Pratt library in Phila. All of this info is from Mayme's book. I have not cross-referenced. The name is possibly form the German "hamanreikas"-kingly garment- also in Mayme's book. Irish friends of mine have commented that my name does not "sound" Irish but name and word origins were not their forte.
