    2. Hi Harry, I saw your posting re: Mayme Hamrick's Book. I have the book if you would like me to look up something. Another option you might try is a posting to the [email protected] site. The Webster County Hamrick's came from there. Caroline [email protected] P.S. What's your line?

    3. One of the most knowledgeable people on the subject of Hamrick that I know is Dan Hamrick. I take every thing that he says as if it were cut in stone. But now I need help. It must be that Dan has not tried to find a copy of Mayme Hamricks book "The Hamrick and other Families, Indian Lore" is not to be found by me. I called Parsons, WV and they told me the flood took out all the records of that book. I then called Mennonite Pub. Co. in Scottsdale, PA. with no luck at all. Maybe some of you can help me come up with the book. Thank you for the Help, Harry

    3. Hi again, I tried sending my family line again, but I still don't think it worked. This time I will just type it out, not using an attached document. Some of you may have received this already. As I said before, I am using someone else's computer, so it may take a while to get back to each of you, though I am really looking forward to to joining you all in this exciting search into the Hamricks!! I am really excited! I did not expect so many replies in reference to my direct line. Thank you for sharing your information. My family line is as follows: My mother, Jana Walraven, is the daughter of Kathleen Woodzell Walraven who was born and raised in Webster Springs, WV. Kay's parents, both born in Webster Co., were Charles Woodzell, b 1883 and Lovica Susan Hamrick, b 1887. Lovica was the daughter of Margaret G. Dodrill, b 1858 and Vincent Hamrick, b Sept 1845; both born in Webster Co. Vincent was the first son of Christopher Hamrick and Eva Gregory, b 1827 Randolph Co. Christopher was born 15 July 1824 in Nicholas Col and died in 1882. His parents were Benjamin Hamrick, who fought in the War of 1812, b 10 Feb 1782 in Faquier Co. and Nancy Agness Gregory, b 1792 Bath Co. Benjamin's parents were Benjamin Hamrick of the Revolution, b 1755 Prince WIlliam Co.? and Nancy McMillian (or is is Mc Millen?), b 1762 Faquier Co. Benjamin of the American Revolution, according to many who replied to my letter, was the son of Benjamin and Mary Sias, and the latter Benjamin was the son of Patrick Hamrick. Most of my info came from Mayme H. Hamrick's book, The Hamrick and other Families. I had been confused by the paragraph in her book regarding the three Benjamins and now that several people have clarified the info, I am interested to know of any records that exist that prove the connection between Patrick and the subsequent Benjamins. I've been unable to find the land records from 1740 mentioned in Mayme's book of Patrick Hamrick and John Sias; Faquier and Prince Wm. Co. Clerks say they don't have them. However, you may be interested toknow that Scott Parham at the Prince Wm CO. Circuit Court, found what he calls a "rare document," an administrator's bond for a Patrick Hamrick, deceased, and is signed by a Patrick Hamrick( his son?). So I guess there are 3 Benjamins, 2 Nancys and now 2 Patricks! Now I am wondering which of the two Patrick's on this document was the father of Benjamin, wife Mary Sias. Mayme H. Hamrick seems to lean toward the notion that the Hamrick name is English, though she does cite a passenger list from Snow Lowther, from Rotterdam, Germany. Kay remembers her grandmother, a Dodrill, used to make German dishes and always assumed that her grandmother learned these dishes form Vincent. Any ideas.? Thanks again for your help. I hope my info is useful to you. Jennifer Henson Smith San Antonio, TX E-Mail: <[email protected]>

    3. Dear Jennifer: There is quite a bit of information available on this family. I will answer your questions to the extent of my knowledge and then mention some references. Benjamin Hamrick of the Revolution was the son of Benjamin Hamrick and Mary Sias. The latter Benjamin is regarded as having been the son of Patrick Hamrick, apparently the original patriarch of this family in America. The Benmjamin Hamrick of the Revolution moved to Western Virginia (what now is Webster County, WV) and is himself the forebear of most of the thousands of West Virginia Hamricks. Three of his sons, William, Benjamin and David, married Dodrills, Gregorys and Millers, and these families comprised nearly all the population of the area along Elk River in West Virginia for much of the 19th century. William's grandson, Rimfire Hamrick, claimed he had more than 4,000 relatives in Webster County alone. There are several sites on the internet with information on these families. Perhaps Jill Ching, Steven Bridges and/or J.R. McKinney can help you find them. The principal reference work is an 1938 book by Mayme Hamrick entitled ®01 ‹ The Hamrick and other Families, Indian Lore, by Mayme H. Hamrick, McClain Printing Co., Parsons, WV. Copyright by: Mayme H. Hamrick 1939 Second printing 1984 McClain Printing Co. Parsons, WV ISBN: 87012-470-6. Printed by the Menonite Publishing House Scottsdale, Pa. The second major work was ®05 ‹ Heritage of a Pioneer by Charles Tunis Dodrill. published by Charles Tunis Dodrill at Huntington, WV. 782 Pages. Library of Congress catalog number 67-22005 Printed by: McClain Printing Co. His father was Benjamin Hamrick, born 1755 Prince William Co. Va. He married Nancy McMillen and fought in the Revolution. My question: Who was Benjamin's (born 1755) father? Is there another Benjamin who was his father? Will records mention a Benjamin who married Mary Sias in 1773. 2. Hello Jill Well, I am new to the list (and besides, I don't even know if my Homrig was even a Hamrick), so perhaps I should keep my mouth shut (or my fingertips off the keyboard). Also, I have unfortunately not kept the previous messages in this matter. (Life's too short for this kind of controversy.) BUT: I distinctly remember that Steven, the expert, said he was unsubscribing in the same message in which he put down the person he thought had asked a stupid question, and I myself marvelled at the tone of his put-down. The reply which supposedly drove him to unsubscribe came afterwards. (And besides, the tone of the reply was far milder than the tone of Steven's put-down.) Yes, absolutely, people should do their own research. By all means. But sharing information graciously is a virtue, and if someone cannot do that, should others put up with uncivil behaviour just because that person knows a thousand times more? I get enough sniping, griping, and side-swiping at work (where I have no choice whom I must deal with). Do I need it in my free time, too? Are we having fun? I have no axe to grind regarding Steven (for or against). I am merely trying to report (1) what I saw, and (2) how I (uninitiated, without any previous knowledge of the people concerned) felt about it. Alan Leighton

    3. Hi Pat~ I don't have any intention to unsub you or anyone from this list unless it is warranted. And someone has to be in charge, this is not a list run by a committee. I am brave enough to take the heat and dish the consequences. Hamrick-ness. I said in my original message that Steven encouraged people to make their own discoveries, as I knew he was tired of always giving out data and getting little thanks. It is a shame we have lost him and that he took offense at remarks about his demeanor, which any one would. The amount of Hamrick info he has is impressive and he should of been regarded as an expert, instead of being regarded as he was, unfairly. People should look up their own histories, he should never of been expected to give give give and he was. If some one had a problem with how Steven had responded to them they could of told ME about it, and I would of talked to him about it, then he would of been gone because of me. BUT, that is not what happened. I don't wish to stifle anyone's need to comment on this latest list controversy, so comment away if you need to~ Jill O'Neall Ching ps I do not talk behind others' backs so I am ccing Steven with this message. ---------- : From: [email protected] : To: [email protected] : Subject: Re: [HAMRICK-L] Flames : Date: Friday, October 09, 1998 2:42 AM : : Dear Jill, : : The first time I saw the message below is when you sent it to the list. : : And while I regret that Steven Bridges has unsubscribed, Harley was correct : that often Steven talked down to the rest of us as though our ideas were : stupid and his guesses were the only correct ones.
