    3. Anne Not quite- unless someone has tampered with the original to make my arms up!. It consists of a chevron argent with three rampant lions d'or on a red field with the moto "Courage sans peur" A Chapeau with four pearls and a tassel on one side. Rather elaborate with ermine draped around the outside. Might be connected to the other side of the family the Ratcliffes but an elderly relative insists it was from the Hampson side. Thanks for your information though. ML> Mike Hi again Mike, I've been doing some more digging and I still can't track down the coat of arms you've quoted at all :-( The Ratcliffes' arms are different again... being very similar to those of the Radcliffes... (of Radcliffe Tower in the town of my birth, so I know the arms well). Radcliffe is Argent, two bends engrailed sable, a label gules, and Ratcliffe is Argent, a bend engrailed sable. Not a rampant lion between them I'm afraid :-( I'm off to the library shortly though, so shall have a poke through the reference books there and see if I can pin it down.. maybe the motto will yield a clue, as I know there is a reference book of mottoes in my library too. Incidentally, if you want to see the arms of Hampson, take a look at Walter Hampson's website here on rootsweb at http://hampson.rootsweb.com/origin.htm - he has a description and a picture, along with some background info. -- Cheers, Anne mailto:Anne.Nichols@ukgateway.net ListOwner: Docwra, Dockery, Garton, Hampson, Schofield Message Board Admin: Docwra, Dockery, Dockerill, Dockrey, Dockrill, Garton, Hampson

    3. Anne and Mike Greetings from down under! I think I have found the owner of the Coat of Arms. It is not english! The exact shield is that of Gandel of Lorraine presumably Vicomte Gandel and it was granted around 1651. I cannot find any associated furniture such as a crest or motto but the description is exact. 3. Anne: further to my email this morning please do not beleive the information shown by Walter. The coat of arms he shows is that of Sir Robert Hampson who was an Alderman of the City of London and who was made baronet by King James I around 1620 He originated from Buckinghamshire. The Hampson name probaly comes from Cheshire or Lancashire since that is where 70-80 per cent of Hampsons lived until the 19th century.
