    3. The image Mike sent me is a little blurred so detail is not obvious. I agree with you about the pearls on the chapeau. The authorities I have read talk exclusively about garlands, circlets and chains around the hat if there is any ornamentation. I havent had too much time on this yet as my daughter and family are moving house and Dad gets to be the family chauffeur but that will all be over this weekend so I will try to organise a day at the National Library and possibly some time at the Defence Force Academy library as they have a good collection of military and associated history. Mike if you read this would you be willing to mail a clearer copy of the arms if you have one? My address is 51 Elkedra Close, Hawker,ACT, Australia 2614. 3. Ralph I am sorry but the arms is in the possession of a cousin of mine and I only just managed to get the poor photo by bribing my Aunt who was visiting her several years ago. I do have a sketch made by my cousin and I will forward this as it has some more detail on it. 3. Mike The more I look at the coat of arms the more convinced I am that the chapeau is in fact a coronet and the pearls are in fact cloverleaf peices above the ring of the coronet. 3. Ralph ( and Anne) I had a closer look, as you said, and I can see what you mean about the crown. The sketch I have does not really help much except that it shows the moto on the ribbon which is not very evident in the photo. I have tried to search the internet for any references to Gandel of Lorraine and there is not one that jumps out immediately as related. I have emailed a geneology website that specialises in Lorraine and I am hoping I will get a reply. Meanwhile I suppose I will wander down to the library here and see what I can find there. What reference book did you find the arms in? Was there any other information on the family Gandel? I have found a lot of references to Gundel, but this appears to be Gernainc in origin.
