My great grandfather was Frederick Hampson, born in Neston, Cheshire approx 1870s, took his mother's (Eliza) maiden name Hampson as was illigitimate (rumour has it he was the son of a well-to-do property owner Eliza worked for as a servant, but that is just rumour) She went on to marry a man called Edward Jones in 1883. Frederick fought in WWI , 257th Royal Engineers Tunnel Company, received 3 medals of honour and was mentioned in dispatches for his bravery - his name is in the London Gazette for 1919. I actually found a military man in USA who has one of his medals but he does not want to sell it back to the family unfortunately. Frederick went on to work on the Mersey tunnel in the 1930s, then the longest tunnel in the world. Hope you find this of help. I am still researching the family and will give you any more interesting pieces of info if/when I find any. It is very easy to be sidetracked by unsubstantiated stories. I do have a list of unbacked information which will be part of the site but I would prefer to concentrate on provable data > Ralph, Canberra > > > ==== HAMPSON Mailing List ==== > To view the HAMPSON Rootsweb GenConnect Boards or search facilities go to: http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/h/a/HAMPSON/ > > > ============================== > Shop Ancestry - Everything you need to Discover, Preserve & Celebrate > your heritage! > http://shop.myfamily.com/ancestrycatalog >
