I understand your logic. The 2 baptisms in 1807 and 1813, if they refer to the same parents, probably suggests that the first child died. But, I'm assuming that the parents of each child are the same. I agree with your point about Jonathan's eldest son and daughter being named after their paternal grandparents. Unfortunately, Jonathan's first son, as far as I know, is our William. The John Hampson you refer to (1851 census of Jonathan's household) is actually John Hulme, whose mother is Catherine (Brundrett) Hulme, then Hampson and his father is John Hulme. John Hulme Snr is Catherine's first husband and Jonathan Hampson is her second husband. John is Jonathan's step son. As far as I can tell, John Hulme was conceived whilst Catherine was married to John Hulme Snr in 1831 and Catherine married Jonathan Hampson in late 1833. I took a similar path to yourself and worked out that Jonathan was born about 1804 in Stretford. I used the 1851 and 1861 census plus Jonathan's death certificate. I have a transcription of St Matthew's Stretford, including baptisms up to 1812. Oddly, I have no Hampson baptisms at all for 1804 but plenty of Hampson baptisms are present either side of that year. This could mean I missed the entry, the film I used did not include the page which contained Jonathan's entry, the entry is significantly out of date order in the register or the parish clerk lost his piece of paper and the register is incomplete (or none of the above!). However, I have not checked the BT so it is possible that his entry may be present there. Sometimes the BT may correct errors found in the register. The closest baptism I could find at St Matthews is 12 June 1803, John son of William & Ann Hampson of Stretford, which coincidentally are the names of Jonathan's eldest male and female children. One or 2 baptism entries mention Pool End, Stretford. Pool End sounds familiar and I think William & Mary Hampson may have resided there for one census year, or it could have been one of their male descendents. I can't remember at the moment but Pool End may not be significant. Unfortunately, I also have a burial entry for John Hampson of Stretford, aged 83 yrs, on 23 June 1886. It is true that I don't know whether these 2 entries refer to the same person, but it is not encouraging. So, I intend to order a film of the BT within the next 1- 2 months. Hopefully, I'll find his baptism entry there. If not, we may have to try and another religion. P.S I don't know why John Clough (b.1852 Stretford) did not use his father's surname of Hulme. (His parents married in 1853 and his mother died 1853/4). It may suggest that John Clough's maternal grandparents had a significant influence on his pre-adult years rather than his father. Possibly, John Hulme's 2nd wife (m. 1854) was unable or unwilling to care for a toddler, as well as, the child may have developed a relationship with his grandparents. It may have been more convenient for all concerned for John Clough to stay with his grandparents. However, this is only speculation. We may never know. bye Maxine
