I experienced some difficulty trying to explain the convulated relationship, it woud not be a surprise to me if I have got one of the many John's mixed up (Clough, Hulme and Hampson) and used the wrong surname in the wrong context. I have had a look at the census information you forwarded to me- Jonathan & Catherine Hampson - Yes, I agree that you have found the right households. I also agree that is more likely that Catherine was to some degree dependent upon the parish for financial support. William & Mary Hampson - I don't have a ready explanation for William's occupation of herbalist. Perhaps a variation of 'market gardener'. Nothing springs to mind that sounds like herbalist that could have confused the enumerator at the time. Jonathan & Mary Hampson - Yes I agree that you have found the right households. Yes it is very likely that his daughter Ellen b. c. 1861 is the same girl present in her aunt's household in 1881. Aunt Martha is the widow of James Hampson, the later is Jonathan's younger brother. James & Martha Hampson Yep, I agree with your references. I found widow, Martha Hampson, at 7 Trafford Grove Stretford at reference RG12/3160 f15 pg24 sch. 135. I also agree with your reference for their son Jonathan in the 1901 census. Over the weekend I should get time to look at Ann (Hampson) Smith, her son John and daughter Ellen. best wishes Maxine
