I have some doubts about the connections on occasion, but at the worst, they're close (if not exact) fits. 1851: HO107/2218 f.585 - 18 Diamond Court, Stretford Present are: Jonathan (gardener), Catherine, John (ag. lab), William (ag. lab), Jonathan (ag. lab.), Ann, James, Joseph and Mary. Place of birth given as Manchester, except for Catherine (Altrincham). 1861: RG9/2218 f.85 that you mention. I agree that the most likely Smith connection is via Ann 1871: RG10/3971 f.101 - Diamond Court, Stretford (no house number) Present are: Catherine (hawker), Joseph (warehouseman), Mary (general servant) 1881:RG11/3888 f.122 - Church View, Stretford (no house number) Present are: Catherine (annuitant), Joseph (packer) 'Annuitant'? Perhaps she was in receipt of some charitable money from the parish - it seems a little unlikely that she would have had investments... Now John's family 1861: RG9/2867 f.37 - Grove Lane North, Didsbury Present are: John (b.1834, Manchester, gardener), wife Sarah (b.1832 Didsbury), Mary Ann (b.1856 Didsbury), John (b.1859, Didsbury). The birth date doesn't quite square, but it's close, and his occupation fits with that of his father. 1871: RG10/3973 f.67 - Cross Street, Barlow Moor, Didsbury Present are: John (gardener, domestic), Sarah (laundress), Mary Ann and Samuel (b.1862 Didsbury) 1881: RG 11/3890 f.71 - Cross Street, Queenston, Didsbury Present are: John (b.1831, Manchester, former labourer), Sarah (charwoman), Mary Ann (charwoman) and two unrelated boarders. 1891: RG12/3161 f.65 - 16 Cross Street, Didsbury Present are: Sarah and Mary Ann (both laundresses) 1901: RG13/3669 f.87 - 16 Cross Street, Didsbury Present is: Sarah (laundress), plus two unrelated boarders William's family you've got sorted, but I was suprised to see his occupation in 1871 given as 'stoker at gas works and herbalist' - an odd combination! Jonathan II's family 1861: RG9/2865 f.68 - Chester Road, Stretford Present are: Jonathan (ag. lab.), wife Mary (b1835 Northenden CHS, charwoman), Alice (b.1858 Stretford), Sarah J. (b1860 Stretford). NB Mary Burgess appears in 1851 as a house servant at Lawton Moor, Northenden (head: Joseph Royle). 1871: RG10/3971 f.70 - 5 Pearson's Buildings, Chester Road, Stretford Present are: Jonathan (farm labourer), Mary, Ellen (b.1862 Stretford), Mary J. (b.1864 Stretford), John (b.1865 Stretford), Elizabeth (b.1870 Stretford) 1881:RG11/3888 f.83 - same address Present are: Jonathan (general labourer), John (no occ.) and Elizabeth 1891: RG12/3164 f.106 - Chorlton Union workhouse, Withington Jonathan (gardener) is an inmate James's family 1871: RG10/3971 f.16 - 3 & 4 Yew Tree Terrace, Chester Road, Stretford Present are: James (gardener), wife Mary (b.1845 Stretford), Mary Jane (b.1868, Stretford) Jonathan (b.1870 Stretford). 1881: RG11/3888 f.70 - 7 Trafford Grove, Stretford Present are: Mary (b. 1844 Beswick, laundress), Jonathan, Edith (b. 1872 Stretford), Martha (b.1875 Stretford), Clara (b.1877, Stretford) and Ellen (Jonathan II's daughter, box maker) 1891: can't find them 1901: RG13/3673 f.12 - 68 Whitefield Road, Chorlton-cum-Hardy Present are: Jonathan (plumber), wife Martha (b.1872, Stretford), Mary (b.1900, Chorlton-cum-Hardy), Herbert (b.1901, Chorlton-cum-Hardy) and an unrelated visitor. and RG13/3665 f.118 - 23 Trafford Grove, Stretford Present are: Martha [sic widow, b.1843, can't read the occupation], Mary J. (b.1833, paper cutter), Edith A. (b.1872, box maker), Clara (b. 1877, box maker) and an unrelated boarder. And that's it. Can't find Ann after 1851, Joseph after 1881, nor Mary after 1871, so there's still some work to do. Best wishes Ian
