Hi, I was told by a list administrator that our HAMPSON surname in England was/is very common. The limited information that I've collected over the last 20 years for my HAMPSONS has shown that to be true, along with very common 1st names. Basically, the HAMPSON surname in the UK is alot like the SMITH surname here in the USA. I believe that my HAMPSONs also came from the area -- John HAMPSON born sometime in the late 1700s, had a daughter Mary HAMPSON born abt 1818 and a son Richard HAMPSON born a couple of years earlier. By 1823 or so, however, they were believed to be in the Chorlton-on-Medlock area near Manchester -- he was a bookkeeper. Mary and husband George HOLLAND and his family emigrated to the US through Canada in 1857. I haven't been able to make a lot of progress on the family, but wanted to repost this for you, because it sounds as if we may be 'cousins' :-) Amy Moseley Rupp amyr@jump.net Austin, Texas, USA ==== HAMPSON Mailing List ==== List guidelines: To post to the HAMPSON Rootsweb Mailing List send to: HAMPSON-L@rootsweb.com ============================== To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 _________________________________________________________________ Protect your PC - get McAfee.com VirusScan Online http://clinic.mcafee.com/clinic/ibuy/campaign.asp?cid=3963

It is common in certain parts of the UK such as Lancashire and Cheshire but not in others such as Northumberland or East Anglia for instance. -- Cheers, Anne The Docwra Family Research Project http://resource.at/docwra
