Hi Marianne The Hampson name is not that common. At the time of the 1881 census there were approx 5500 Hampsons resident in the UK. This is out of a population of about 30 million. Of the 5500 about 3500 lived in Lancashire. The rest were mainly in Derbyshire, Cheshire , London and Warwick. The general proportion seems to have changed slightly between 1881 and 1901, the populatin went up whilst the Hampsons stayed more or less the same. Incidentally Ralph, I have a scan of the 1902 Q3 Marriages from the BMD project, covering the Hampsons - have you extracted these from the BMD records and if not, would you like a copy/transcript? -- Cheers, Anne The Docwra Family Research Project http://resource.at/docwra
