There's a Hampson in here. OBITS from Barton's Historical Gleanings:- 3rd Series, item LXX. pages 296-298. The following obituary notices have been extracted from the Monthly Magazine, and will no doubt be found of some interest to many of your readers, particularly to those families who have descended from distinguished characters alluded to:--- "Died at Bolton, in his 78th year, Mr. Seth Flitcroft, yeoman. He was the father of thirty children by two wives; five by a former and twenty-five by his present widow." (April, 1798.) "At Blackrod, in his 71st year, Mr. James Rothwell. He had been upwards of 50 years Master of the Free Grammar School of that town, and was greatly esteemed as a valuable teacher, a sincere friend, , and a man of the strictly probity." (Aug, 1798.) "At Bolton, in his 80th year, the Rev. Christopher Hopper, a preacher in the connection of the late Rev. John Wesley for upwards of half a century." (May, 1802.) Note: There is much more concerning Rev. Christopher Hopper, in this same item number. -LRB. "At Bolton, in her 25th year, Miss Smalley, only child of Mr. S., of the firm of Smalley, Thwaites, & Co., ironfounders, a young lady whose gentle disposition and amiable manners had endeared her to a numerous acquaintance, while the recollection of her decided piety, and of her heavenly hope before death forms the strong consolation of her family, and afterwards a bright example to those many young friends who loved her as a sister." (January, 1910.) "Died at Bolton, in August, 1809, the Rev. John Whittle, aged 69." (September, 1809.) "At Bolton, Mr. Sharples, died April, 1804." "Died at Heath Charnock, in April, 1806, Alice Farnworth, aged 82. She had 5 children, 62 grandchildren, 132 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren, in all 204. She worked for her living at weaving till within a few weeks of her death." "Died at Bolton, Sep., 1806, Mr. Garner, printer." "Died at Bolton, Mr. George Rome, surgeon and druggist, aged 44." (July, 1810.) "Died at Bolton-le-Moors, Mr. J. Hardman, attorney," (February, 1803.) "Died at Aberdeen, whither he had gone for he recovery of his heath, the Rev. James Smith, late of the Associate Burgher Congregation, Bolton-le-Moors. (Aug., 1806.) (Note: This entry was previously submitted to the list.-LRB) "Died at Street Gate, Little Hulton, Mr. Richard Jones, aged 72. A man of unaffected simplicity of manners, hospitable, humane, and friendly; he was a great lover of agricultural improvements, and though almost without the first element of science, he brought the practice of artificially flooding land to a great perfection. He has left behind him several valuable premiums conferred upon him by the Agricultural Society of which he was a member, and, what is of greater value in the estimation of his friends and relations, he left behind him the character of an honest man." (April, 1809). "At Bolton, Rev. William Hampson, clerk, minister of Street Gate Chapel, and a justice of the peace acting in the populous division of Great Bolton, where his exertions were so well known as a zealous and independent magistrate. (No date given.-LRB) "At Bolton, Mary, the wife of Mr. H. Nicholson. She was no ordinary woman; and though of an inferior station in society, her virtues and mental power would have adorned its higher Corinthian order. (Nov. 1821.) "At Bolton, 76, Betty Chapman, great granddaughter of the celebrated Rev. N. Heywood, of Little Lever, near Bolton, Unitarian minister at Ormskirk. (Oct. 1, 1825.)" Such as: Of "Betty Chapman, aged 76, great granddaughter of the celebrated Rev. N. Heywood, Little Lever, ...Brown, in his unfinished history of Bolton, 1824-5, says she was then in her 79th year, and that she was great great granddaughter of Oliver Heywood, not "N." (Nathaniel) his brother, and that the great grandfather of Mrs. Betty Chapman, who resided with her husband (1824-5) in Little Bolton, was the Rev.
