Greetings Mike! I would be very interested in both the photo and the coat of arms. The only titled people in the family that I know of are Sir Robert Hampson and his descendants. This line died out in the 1920s. Sir Robert was made a baronet by King James I some time around 1620. He was an alderman of the City of London. I have not found any other titled branch of the Hampson Clan. My Hampsons:-James Hampson married Hannah Jackson in Trinity Church Coventry 1804 and at that time James was an umbrella maker but was later a bookkeeper. He was born about 1792. Soon after getting married they moved to Manchester in 1809 and his son, James George Hampson, ran a fruit shop in Eccles. I do have a strange photo which may or may not be related to the American Civil War? It is of a group of seven persons standing in front of Beaumaris Castle in Anglesea North Wales. On enlarging the photo it looks like one is wearing a large hat with crossed swords like the American Civil War hat. There is also another with possibly a turban! This photo was about 1880 I think. There were relatives who said that the Hampsons were supposed to be related to an earl and I have a photo of a coat of arms of a baron that a great aunt has but I have not been able to trace the arms (as yet). Any connections? I can send you the photo/arms if anyone is interested! The Hampson comes from NW England probably from Cheshire. During the industrial Revolution many moved to Lancashire but Derbyshire, Staffordshire, Warwick and London had sizeable populations of Hampsons by the midnineteenth century. At the time of the 1881 census about 35 per cent lived outside Lancashire. I have no information directly relating to Eli but it might be worthwhile checking immigration records and shipping lists. If he was born in England I may be able to help. Hi everyone, Although not directly related to our surname itself, I feel that this is a project of sufficient merit to solicit your support, as it may well prove to be a useful source of research for us all if it happens. The UK's Public Records Office (PRO) is seeking support for a Lottery Funding grant application, so it can make available as an online searchable archive, some 20,000 Mediaeval wax seals from documents held in the PRO. To quote from the leaflet on this, the archive will offer "...a catalogue, fully searchable under many different heads: names of owner and user, date, region, design, inscription etc. Exact consistency of description, even for detailed elements of design, will make the catalogue a tool of great value for mediaeval study and research." Further it tells us that "... Mediaeval seals on-line is not concerned only with seals of kings, bishops, knights, monasteries and the like, but also those of ordinary people (almost unknown, although in fact some four-fifths of surviving seals)". If you would like to express support for this valuable addition to online archives, please visit the PRO here: http://www.pro.gov.uk/online/seals.htm and click on the Mediaeval Seals link (IN ORANGE AT THE TOP OF THE PARAGRAPH) to download the Acrobat .pdf file which has a copy of the support form for you to complete, and the address to which it needs returning. This can be done either electronically by e-mail or via snail mail. The Mediaeval seals project is part of the UK PRO's programme of making information available online. The 1901 Census will be made wholly available online for the first time in January 2002. -- Cheers, Anne mailto:Anne.Nichols@ukgateway.net ListOwner: Docwra, Dockery, Garton, Hampson, Schofield Message Board Admin: Docwra, Dockery, Dockerill, Dockrey, Dockrill, Garton, Hampson
Jane Colagiovanni: Do you have any further information on the boys, John, Thomas, George and Charles? Is it possible that one of them ended up around Tarrytown, NY? My grandmother, Laura Augusta Hampson, was born there on 28 June, 1895, and I have no information on her parents, but I do believe there was an uncle, Thomas, who fought in the Civil War. I have his war record garnered from computer data. Bob Telford, Long Beach, CA

Anne: I have the unique problem of trying to trace Hampsons in America. It's not an unknown name since one of the world's greatest baritones is the American Thomas Hampson. However, I'm trying to track my grandmother, Laura Augusta Hampson who lived in Tarrytown, NY. She was born June 28, 1865 and married my grandfather, George Stainton Telford (a Cumbrian) in NY on Feb 18, 1890. She died in NYC on Feb 17, 1906 and is buried in Kensico Cemetery in NY State. I know she had an uncle who served in the Civil War and was imprisoned in Richmond, VA. and that she had a sister named Francine who married Apsley Boulding and quite possibly 6 or 8 other siblings. However, I can't find any information on her parents or when they or their ancestors came over from England. Can anyone help? Robert Sheldon Telford, Long Beach, CA

My great grandfather was Frederick Hampson, born in Neston, Cheshire approx 1870s, took his mother's (Eliza) maiden name Hampson as was illigitimate (rumour has it he was the son of a well-to-do property owner Eliza worked for as a servant, but that is just rumour) She went on to marry a man called Edward Jones in 1883. Frederick fought in WWI , 257th Royal Engineers Tunnel Company, received 3 medals of honour and was mentioned in dispatches for his bravery - his name is in the London Gazette for 1919. I actually found a military man in USA who has one of his medals but he does not want to sell it back to the family unfortunately. Frederick went on to work on the Mersey tunnel in the 1930s, then the longest tunnel in the world. Hope you find this of help. I am still researching the family and will give you any more interesting pieces of info if/when I find any. I am trying to assemble a complete databse of Hampsons past and present. I have about twenty five thousand entries at the present time. Some of these are obviously for the same person (birth and marriage for instance). The ultimate aim is to put all this information on line as a series of databases, one for each type of entry, parish register, civil registration, military service etc. One specific problem I am trying to solve is the life of my great-grandparents Alfred Ross Hampson and Louisa Mary Ann Hampson nee Bannister. They were both on the "Halls" in the late nineteenth century but reords are regrettably few and far between unless you were one of the very top stars.I have three fixed date/place records - their marriage in 1877, my grandfathers birth in 1879 and the 1881 census. Beyond this is mainly conjecture. I am about to order up some death certificates one of which would seem to be Gt-Grandfathers but i will wait until that is confirmed. The release of the 1901 census next january will be very useful. Ralph Frank Hampson, debolbec@bigpond.net.au, Canberra
