Hello Listers, My name is Walter Hampson, in 1999 I started the Hampson surname list - but ill health and personal family problems overcame me. Attached to the surname board was a link to the Hampson website at RootsWeb, and as you may be aware the last update to that site was 1999. I am pleased to say that due to the fact that RootsWeb decided that all old subscribers sites would remain active, I have been able to regain access to the site and update date it. Whilst I appreciate that the site may not have any bearing on the Hampson family you are researching, I hope that it proves interesting and perhaps I may get more contacts from the USA and Canada. Thank you for taking the time to read this - Oh yes the site can be found at: http://hampson.rootsweb.com Kindest regards to all. Walter Walter Hampson

I am searching for any information on Thomas Hampson and Sarah Dawson, who were married in Prestwich, Lancashire in 1810. I believe this Hampson family was Catholic. Thomas may have been a painter. His sons James, William and Joseph, and daughter Martha emigrated to Australia from the 1840s, but others may have stayed in England. I have no idea when Thomas was born, or where, or even details of his death, despite a lot of searching. Nor have I any other information on Sarah Dawson - but I'm keen to find out! Any connections? I'm looking for information on her parents and ancestors along with siblings, one of whom I know to have been Francine Hampson who married Apsley BOULDING. Laura married my grandfather, George Stainton TELFORD, in 1890, when she was 25, and they lived in NYC until she died in 1906 from the dropsy. She's buried in Kensico Cem. in New York State. My grandfather and my father's sister, Ethel, ended up in PA in the Philadelphia area, and it seems as though there might have been a family reason for moving from NYC to PA. If you have any information on the William HAMPSON born 1851 that might link to my own HAMPSON family, I would appreciate hearing from you. Bob Telford, Long Beach, CA

He left my grandmother and she told her sons he was dead - my father had someone tell him as a young man that his father was not dead and pointed him out in a bar. Sadly it's time for one of my not very frequent virus alert heads up messages again :-( You only get these from me when the virus is a bad one and this *is* another bad one! Bugbear is the name (or Tanatos if you use Kaspersky anti-virus program) This is being received by many list subscribers NOT FROM ROOTSWEB but with subject lines that look as if that's where it's from. This is because the virus copies messages stored on your PC and adds the virus code to it and then mails them out completely unknown to you - using your ISP's default mail server to send them. You'll be able to tell what they are as the infected messages have a blank or un-named recipient in the To: address rather than the usual Rootsweb list name/address that you see with genuine list mail. They are also much bigger than normal list mail - around 50-70kb. To see Kaspersky's description of this one see here: http://www.kav.ch/avpve/worms/email/tanatos.stm for MacAfee users see here: http://vil.mcafee.com/dispVirus.asp?virus_k=99728 for Norton users read here: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.bugbear@mm.html This is a particularly nasty virus on several counts - firstly it knocks out your anti-virus program and your firewall if you have one. It *also* prevents you from reinstalling your anti-virus - it is network aware so will spread to any other PC via a network (e.g. if you have 2 PC's and share an internet connection between them etc). It *also* - as if that wasn't enough - contains a remote access trojan which steals information such as passwords, credit card details etc from files on your PC. Since this was launched yesterday I've received around 30 copies from infected list subscribers so the chances of you receiving a copy from an infected person are HIGH! The major anti-virus companies have released protection for this TODAY so if you've not done so already, please update your a/v programs NOW and protect yourself. If you don't have an a/v program then all the major ones do evaluation copies that'll protect you for up to 30 days - and the cost of them is so reasonable now that it's plain daft not to be protected. There are free a/v progs too - www.grisoft.com offers one - but these are sometimes slower to update their a/v definitions so may not offer quite so much protection against brand new viruses. For a free firewall check out http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp As ever, if you need any further advice/info about this please contact me OFFLIST and I'll be happy to help if I can. Also, please no discussion about viruses onlist - send to me offlist only, thanks! Hope you all manage to escape this one, best wishes, -- Cheers, Anne mailto:docwras@yahoo.co.uk Rootsweb ListOwner: Dockery, Dockray, Dockree, Docwra, Hampson, Schofield Rootsweb Message Board Admin: Chandler, Dockerill, Dockery, Dockray, Dockree, Dockrey, Dockrill, Docwra, Hampson The Docwra Family Research Project http://resource.at/docwra Archive CD Books - a user-supported project to make old & rare books easily available to genealogists & historians worldwide http://www.archivecdbooks.org

This is a message forwarded from the Eng-Cambs list with the permission of Steve Odell the author, as it may be of interest to many who have Cambridgeshire connections - do have a look at the site - it is fascinating! From: Steve Odell <steve.odell@dial.pipex.com> To: ENG-CAMBRIDGESHIRE-L@rootsweb.com Date: Thursday, September 12, 2002, 7:26:34 PM Subject: [ENG-CAMB] Re: The "Speculum Gregis" for Croydon 1843 ===8<==============Original message text=============== The "Speculum Gregis" or "An account of all the inhabitants of the Parish of Croydon in the County of Cambridgeshire commencing from 1 January 1843". by the Rev Francis Fulford (1803-1868) The Reverend Francis Fulford was appointed Rector of Croydon-cum-Clopton in Cambridgeshire in July 1841, remaining in that parish for four years. He compiled a list of inhabitants adding their ages, occupations, literacy and church attendance as well as some 'off the cuff' comments. The notebook - a "Speculum Gregis" - or Mirror of his Flock - was updated by his successor, the Reverend Sandilands until 1848, when it was put away with other parish documents, and eventually after the departure of the last resident Rector, was deposited in the Cambridgeshire Record Office (P 53/1/11). The Speculum Gregis was published as "The Rector and his Flock" in 1980 by Bassingbourn Booklets, with additional commentary by editor David Ellison. This new updated and corrected online version of the "Speculum Gregis" has the original Ellison introduction, the Fulford preface, the full text of all 91 pages (with additional research), an alphabetical index of names, and background material on the Reverend Francis Fulford, the village Rector who went on to become the first Bishop of Montreal in Canada.
