Hi The Name Hampson derives from "Hamons son" and Hamon was most common in Lancashire and the surrounding counties (but not exclusive to that area we believe). The name Hampson actually appears sometime in the 12th/13th centuries. Other names such as Hammondson have th same origin and spellings such Haemmesounn do appear in the older records. With regard to your John query I will check and see if i have any useful information and get back to you. Hi, I've read the name Hampson means something about working with rope (Hemp) and the work was centered in Lancashire, thus, Hampson being common to Lancs, although found elsewhere with later migrations around England. (April, 1809). "At Bolton, Rev. William Hampson, clerk, minister of Street Gate Chapel, and a justice of the peace acting in the populous division of Great Bolton, where his exertions were so well known as a zealous and independent magistrate. Is there anybody else > researching this branch of the Hampson tree? Marjorie McManus: It may be that we are both searching for the same Hampson family. Unfortunately, I have even less information than you, but it does sort of coincide. My grandmother, Laura Augusta Hampson, was born in Tarrytown, NY 28 June, 1865. My grandfather came from St. Bees, Cumberland, to NYC in 1882, and they were married 18 Feb 1890 in NY. She died 17 Feb 1906 and is buried in Kensico Cemetery, NY. All I have on her is the above plus the fact that she had a sister named Francine who married an Apsley Boulding but had no children. Also, my grandfather somehow gravitated to PA where my aunt, Ethel Telford, married and raised a family in Philadelphia. It's possible that the Hampsons had relatives in PA and it's possible they could be related to your strain. One other factor is a rumor that my grandmother's uncle served in the Union forces in the Civil War and was imprisoned in the Richmond, VA prison for a while. Anything you can come up with that can tie in with the above will be much appreciated. Bob Telford Robert Sheldon Telford, Long Beach, CA, USA
There are lots of Hampson's in Canada as well, and their census' are easier to check, fewer people there. -----Original Message----- From: Majorie & Hugh McManus [mailto:marj7@bigpond.com] Sent: Monday, August 04, 2003 7:42 AM To: HAMPSON-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [HAMPSON] NEW LISTER I'm wondering whether anybody can throw some light on my Hampson family. Father John was born about 1832 in Wigan, Lancashire, then moved to Staffordshire and then onto Derbyshire. Mother Mary Ann (Rhodes) was born about 1838 in Staffordshire. They had children Emma (my great grandmother), Martha, John, Margaret, Rose, William, Arthur, Ernest, Walter, Clara and Joseph (that I know of!!). Emma and Martha I have been able to keep track of, but the rest of the family disappear from England after the 1881 census. I believe they may have gone to America in the 1880's - I am basing this on two very vague points. To the person researching the ancestry of William Hampson, I would like to check further the information you have on that line. Ironically, the Laura Augusta Hampson who is my grandmother was born 28 June 1865, rather close to the time the Laura Hampson you have. Also, she had a sister named Francine who couild match the Florence Peacock you have -- with a little bending. Could you give me any information on the descendants of your William Hampson or others in his immediate family? I'm still trying to find Laura Augusta Hampson's family who, I've been told, lived in Tarrytown, NY. She surely had relatives in NJ or PA. Robert Sheldon Telford, Long Beach, CA
Hello -- I'm searching for any available information on the following. I haven't checked the 1841 or 51 census. It would be lovely if someone who had access could take a quick look. James & Sarah (?) HAMPSON (both b. approx 1775) parents of Hannah Hampson, christened July 17, 1796 Manchester. (I believe the Cathedral) Hannah married Aaron Johnson (christened July 7 1799 Saint Peter, Swinton) on Dec. 8. 1828 in Machester. Hannah and Aaron had at least 3 children Eliza (born Oct 1829) William John (christened July 8 1832) James (christened Sept. 6, 1835) Eliza JOHNSON married Edward Howard LEECH (LEACH) on Nov 27 1848 in Manchester. Edward was born 1825 place unknown. Eliza Johnson Leech and Edward Howard Leech (who migrated to the US between 1854 and 1858) had at least 4 children: Edward -- 1852 (Manchester?) Alfred -- May 1854 (Manchester?) Thomas -- February 1858 (Providence RI, USA) Sarah -- January 1856 (Massachusetts, USA) Thank you -- Kate Monteiro

George and Laura were married 18 Feb 1890, presumably in NY and lived in Hell's Kitchen at the time of my father's birth in 1892. They later moved up to 66th St. next to or across from a Baptist Church which my grandfather did not attend being a staunch Scotch Presbyterian!
