Surnames: HAMPSON of Lancashire Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/VUh.2ACIB/142 Message Board Post: Since posting my query in March 2005, regarding Edward and Eliza HAMPSON (nee Harrison), I have found out a little more about the family and I am hoping that this information may help someone out there come up with the answer why this young couple immigrated first to the USA and then later to Australia in 1853/54, which was at the time of the great gold rush in western New South Wales and Victoria. Edward's parents were Thomas and Nancy Hampson. Nancy was either, Nancy Slater, marriage took place to a Thomas Hampson on 30 Sept 1799, St Peter, Bolton Le Moors, Lancashire or Nancy Dawns married a Thomas Hampson on 20th April, 1801 at Leigh, Lancashire, England. Their children were all bapt.at Saint Michael, Ashton Under Lyne, Lancashire:- Hannah HAMPSON b.25 Sept 1808 Henry HAMPSON b.26 July 1810 James HAMPSON b.01 Dec 1812 Sarah HAMPSON bapt.22 Sept 1816 Francis HAMPSON bapt.11 April 1819 Charles HAMPSON bapt. 03 Jun 1821 Thomas HAMPSON bapt. 18 May 1823 Edward HAMPSON bapt. 15 May 1825. **** Edward HAMPSON married Eliza HARRISON on 1st Jan 1844 at Manchester Cathedral, Lancashire. Eliza, maybe the daughter of James and Betty HARRISON, born 28 May 1823 and bapt. 07 Sep 1823 at the Congerational or Independent Church at Hatherlow, Cheshire, England. Between 1844 and 1848, this couple sailed to the USA, as sometime in 1848 Eliza gave birth to a son, Wright Harrison HAMPSON in Salem, Mass. Followed by Desdemona Ann HAMPSON in 1851 - Newark, New Jersey and Alice Maria HAMPSON in 1853 - Boston, Mass. Maybe, some of Edward's or Eliza's siblings were already in the USA. However, by Nov 1854 the family were in New South Wales in Australia for the birth of their fourth child, a son Thomas. I have not been able to find the ship which the couple sailed to the USA, or the ship they sailed to Australia on. However, a trip to the State Library in Sydney may solve the voyage to Sydney between 1853 or 1854. Edward Hampson was killed on Christmas Eve 1862, when thrown from his horse into a tree, in the Macleay River district on the Mid North Coast of N.S.W, while carrying out his duties as a police constable. I have not been able to find the death of his wife Eliza. After thier arrival in Australia, they had five more children, Thomas, William, Edward, Henry and Mary. Any information on this family would be very much appreciated. Janice - Belrose - Sydney, Australia

When she died in 1906, one of her children ended up in Philadelphia. This sounds as though the HAMPSON family was tied together in this rather small area. Can you give me any HAMPSON data on connections which might have existed between Tarrytown, Newark and Philadelphia? Bob Robert Sheldon Telford, Long Beach, CA

Do you know what ship the family sailed on to Australia from the U.S.? Also, what date and year they arrived? Do you know why they left the U.S.A. for Australia? Was it because of the Gold Rush? Any information you can give re the history of this family, would be very much appreciated. Was an inquest held into the death of Edward HAMPSON the father in 1868 and at the time of his death, was he on duty as a Police constable? Look forward to hearing from you. Also, did Arthur Pringe and Mary Amelia STEWART (nee HAMPSON) have any children? Regards, Janice. Belrose, Sydney.

Edward was the son of Thomas and Nancy HAMPSON of Lancashire, Edward was born in 1825. He was baptised on 15 May, 1825 t St Michael, Ashton Under Lyne, Lancashire. Not long after Edward and Eliza's marriage they immigranted to the USA. Where one son we are aware of was born, Wright Harrison HAMPSON between 1848 and 1852. Not long after Wright HAMPSON'S birth, the couple, we believe with two other children, also born in the USA, decided to leave the States and immigrate to Australia. Where after settling in the Colony of New South Wales, they continued to enlarge their family. Born were Thomas 1854, William 1856, Edward 1857, Henry 1860 and Mary 1862, all born in the Macleay River district, in Kempsey on the mid north coast of New South Wales. Edward became a Police Constable, and sadly while on duty on Christmas Eve in 1862 he was thrown from his horse and "dashed against a tree". He died from his injuries. Does anyone know more about this family, especially their home in England and were there any of the HAMPSON family already in the USA? Was this why they may have first gone to the States to join them, before they decided to move on to Australia? Any help would be very much appreciated. Regards, Janice Belrose - Sydney - Australia

The problem area is the children by his first marriage, who are the folks whom Tracey (my cousin) who did the earlier post on the board (gatewayed to this list) is trying to trace. I am seeking contact with the descendants of: Robert Henry HAMPSON (an engineer with CSR in Pyrmont, Sydney 1880s - 1900s). In 1885, he married Rebecca JONES (1866 - ..) in Newtown, Sydney. Their surviving children were: Robert H Hampson (1886 - ..); Kendrick F A Hampson (1889 - ...); Lillian E D Hampson (1893 - ..), married William Hodges PRICE in 1916; Ruth M P A Hampson (1896 - ..), married Ernest C FIELDUS in 1922; Rebecca Jones' grandfather was Joseph Jones (1801-1870) a convict to Port Jackson (Sydney) in 1818 on the "Hadlow (1)". A Jones family history has been published and I am interested in making contact with descendants of this Hampson family. Margaret - margaret@cremorne1.com
