    1. [HantsLife] St. Hillier

    3. Hillier's, the world renowned nursery and plantsmen, have their headquarters on Romsey Road, Winchester. You never know, perhaps the person compiling the list you looked at Maureen was a keen gardener - and like many I know today who refer to these wonderful growers as "St. Hillier's" !!! I did look on Hillier's web site - http://www.hillier.co.uk/index.html to see if there was mention of being bombed during WW2, but as you might guess - nothing. So, this morning I rang them but the young girl who answered the phone was somewhat thrown by my question, however she assured me someone would ring me tomorrow with the answer! Personally, I doubt a bomb dropped on Romsey Road, Winchester as I think there were only two 'strays' dropped when damaged German planes, returning from raids on Southampton, dropped their remaining bombs. I think these were nearer the centre of the town. Moya Page (nee Banting) researching BANTING and PERREN in Hampshire

    1. [HantsLife] Thanx re St. Hillier's, Romsey Rd & to Steve

    3. Many, many thanks to everyone who replied to my request re above, including Steve HILLIER. (When I started this, I already had a feeling something cheeky would come out of Esperance!!!. Thanx, Steve, for the chuckle). When I was first told about Hilliers Gardens by Sue, I thought that was the answer as both my BEARE & WEEKS families produced working gardeners (Broadlands, Romsey, Stratton Park, Winchester & Palmerston Park, Southampton) but the more I learned about Hilliers, the less likely it seemed to be the connection. Just to have one more shot at it, this is what I found on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website in the Civilian Register - "In memory of Florence Emily WEEKS, wife of G.Weeks, of St. Hilliers, Romsey Road, at St. Hilliers, Romsey Road, who died as a result of enemy action on Sunday 1 December 1940, age 56. Commemorated in the County Borough of Southampton section of the Civilian War Dead Register". Her daugher Eva Mary, 21, was also killed as were Florence Ada BEARE, 27, wife of Ronald Edward Beare, & their sons Ronald, 8, Colin, 6 & Roger, 2. I assume Florence Ada BEARE & the boys were dau & grandsons of Florence Ada & G. WEEKS as their address was also given as St. Hilliers, Romsey Road. I think they were all my gran & grandpa's cousins. Do you think it might have been a largish house in the Nursling/Rownhams area ? I was unaware that semi rural areas of Southampton had been badly affected by the bombing. Maybe St. Hilliers was in Upper Shirley. Perhaps I'd better contact Joanne Smith at Southampton City Archives again. Any more ideas would be very gratefully received. Kind regards, Maureen, Hampshire Hog in Kiwiland, NZ
