Hello Jo, If you still cannot trace the burial of Peter Duke consider the practise that was common for young children right up until the 1950's. Nowadays the Church and local authority cemetery departments are very reluctant to discuss it, but babies and young children were very often buried on top of the existing occupants of the grave. Yes, un-baptized babies were not supposed to be buried in consecrated ground, so this was one way of getting around it, but that is not the entire answer because baptized babies were also buried in this way. It happened in our own family. My grandfather was buried in 1925 and had asked not to have a headstone but just a stone vase. When my aunt went to the cemetery one day in the 1950's she found grandfather's vase was missing but there was a vase engraved with the name of a young child in its place. It was very distressing for both families at the time; the local authority offered to remove the child if my grandmother wanted them to. However Granny's concern was for the mother of the young child who was actually known to her, so the child remains buried there although the grave is registered in my grandfather's name. So if you do not find the name of Peter DUKE on the headstone do not assume he is not there. The name I have been given says it should be a Peter Duke in the plot buried on 27 Feb 1859, however I can find no burial or baptism of him (allegedly aged 2 years) However there is a Priscilla Duke, baptised in 1857 and buried in 27 Feb 1859 so I believe that somewhere either in the parish registers or the records book from which my cousin found the entry is wrong. Can anyone help?
