Who remembers Empire Day? if you are a silver surfer like me you will do. May 24th was the day we celebrated being Great Britain. When the map of the world was covered in big red areas denoting the countries belonging to the great British empire on which the sun never set. At school we held a pageant and we pupils dressed in the national costumes of the various countries paraded around singing patriotic songs, "Rule Britannia" and "Land of Hope and Glory". Yes, those were the halcyon days of my youth. Alas, today, with all the trouble in the world there is not much hope and very little glory, but this old-timer is still proud to be British.!!
In Canada, we celebrate Victoria Day on the Monday that precedes May 25, rather than 24 May, which is Queen's Victoria actual birthdate , the Queen's official birthday, and of course Empire Day. To us that was last monday 19 May. So yes Len, we still do celebrate the date, and our heritage, but perhaps the Commonwealth, rather than the Empire. On 1st July, in Canada we also celebrate Canada Day. It was known , until 1982, as Dominion Day, the date on which the nation was formed in 1867, through the British North America Act. The need for a union of the colonies at that time was made more urgent by the anti-British Fenians raids from the USA. So to you Len, a happy Empire Day David ----- Original Message ----- From: "len-strong" <len-strong@supanet.com> To: <HAMPSHIRE-LIFE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, May 23, 2003 3:07 PM Subject: [HantsLife] Empire Day. > Who remembers Empire Day? if you are a silver surfer like me you will do. Hi Len. Those were not the halcyon days of your youth. They are hallucinations from eating & smoking that weed stuff ! Better hang on to those dreams 'cos, that's all that's left of the once great country. Seamus.
