I'm researching a John Jackson age 22 who in the 1871 census was listed as a convict at Portsea, Hampshire. Could someone please tell me what the name of this prison would be. Thank You Don Wilson
Hi Don, In 1871 he would probably have been at Portsmouth Borough Gaol and House of Correction. His Majesty's Prison, St Mary's Road, Portsmouth, did not open until 31st August, 1878, and I believe that the use of hulks for civilians ended in 1857, their use having declined over the previous decade. The 1881 census lists two prisons in Portsmouth - ""HMS Local Prison Milton" and "H M Convict Prison Portsmouth" However, doesn't the actual 1871 census give its name ? See www.institutions.org.uk/prisons/England/HAM/hampshire_prisons.htm This states that HMP Portsmouth opened in 1878, but there is also a link to a page about Portsmouth Gaol in 1847/48. Portsmouth Gaol is in the 1861 census listing at www.parishchest.com/en-gb/dept_713.html You could also try the Prisons Mailing List.
