Hi folks I have a birth certificate for a male, Henry Robert Williams GILLY, born in Southampton in 1860 who then disappears without trace. He does not appear with his mother's family in 1881. However I have found someone on the 1881 census with a similar name (Henry M GILLEY) who appears nowhere else - no birth record, etc. He is the right age (plus/minus a year) and says he was born in Portsmouth though I can find no record of anybody of that surname having been there. He is in the Navy at 1881. I am wondering if it is possible that he was given up for adoption or to an orphanage at birth, never knew his middle names or where he was really born. Does anyone know of a likely place that might have taken him in 1860? Thanks for any help (By the way - shock! horror! Heard a rumour today that they are closing all the LDS centres in NZ except those in the four main centres. Can this be true? How can they do this to us? Aaarghh!)
