    3. Hi Edna, The Queen acceded to the throne on 6 Feb 1952 and was crowned on 2 Jun 1953. I was in the Tower during May/June 1952, and I remember we lined the streets of London, for some ceremony, which I thought was the proclamation of the Coronation, with drums beating, flags flying and bayonets fixed. . Although the war ended in 1945, rationing did not. Food was safely reaching Britain again in a reasonable amounts, but much of it had to be diverted to feed Europe, which was in a much worse state the Britain. Clothing rationing lasted from 1941 to 1949, and food rationing from Jan 1940 to 1954 - meat was the last item to come off - so it was still in effect at the time of the coronation. There is a story that a particular village that had always celebrated a Coronation with roasting an ox, had to get special permission. I believe that some items that were de-rationed were re-rationed - bread ? - at the time of the Korean war. Petrol rationing was re-imposed at the time of the Suez War. "Those were the days, my friend, We thought they would never end."
