Yes, lovely stuff Len. We had Virol too, that came in white waxed cartons with wax screw caps ( the first type of this packaging we had ever seen), now that had a sort of toffee and lemon flavour, lovely and sweet with a sort of tartness to it. Malt Extract tasted just like liquid toffee - it came in large round bellied jars with flattened back and front; brown glass, but I cannot remember the label. I didn't like the orange juice as it was too watery- perhaps that was my Mum's fault for diluting it too much but yes I remember that label and bottle, we just called it Welfare Orange as it came from the baby welfare clinic. Did you ever try the National Dried milk that came in large silver tins with blue writing? It was the first artificial baby's milk we had seen and we older ones loved to dip in a spoon or two to eat it unmixed with water - delicious!! Did you also have green Minadex during the winter months? I think it was a sort of vitamin tonic, again delicious. Oh! but my favourite was Col Liver Oil - I simply could not get enough of that!!! I was the eldest of 5 and was expected to set an example, well that was no problem when it came to C.L.O We all lined up in age order to be dosed with the C/L/O/, Malt Extract, Virol and Minadex and this was one time I didn't mind being first and was able to say convincingly how delicious it was!!. The nights I didn't sound so convincing were (thanks for the memory Chris) California Syrup of Figs night!! However I also wasn't so keen when it came to having our first polio injections, during the epidemic in the 50's, but I was still expected to go first and say it didn't hurt!! What lovely memories, Moya ----- Original Message ----- From: Len Payne To: HAMPSHIRE-LIFE-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, April 21, 2003 4:47 PM Subject: [HantsLife] OJ No can definitely remember "nicking" my young cousins O.J. and Virol, as well as the Malt Extract (lovely on bread and scrape) during the war, his dad was killed in Burma in 1945, he was born in1941, so it was around during those years...Len in Vancouver... ==== HAMPSHIRE-LIFE Mailing List ==== Visit Where your ancestors lived.....
