Hi, Does anyone have a list of street names for Shirley, Southampton for the year 1913? I am transcribing the Upper Clatford Parish Record and I cannot be sure of the writing - could it be Shayer Road, Shirley or possibly Thayer or Shager Road. Possibly someone out there knows the person : William GODWIN, a policeman. I would like to get this address right, so please help if you can. I have no recollection of the name though, despite living in Shirley for 25 years & attending the school in Bellemoor Rd that runs parallel to the street in question! However, my map makes it look like a very built-up area, suggesting terraced rather than semi-detached houses, which would indicate they've been there for a while. From Victorian times, perhaps? As a Hampshire interest, by 'Googling' I discovered a self-taught artist in the style of John Constable, one William SHAYER who painted mainly New Forest scenes, born in Southampton, who lived & died in Shirley. I assume the street takes its name from him. Hopefully this will be the street you need & someone can come up with its full history. Good luck. Kind regards, Maureen, NZ
