    1. [HantsLife] Divorce - Separation in UK 1890's

    3. SKS put this on the list a while ago... Edna - Ottawa ------------------------------- Try writing to the Principal Registry of the Family Division, Decree Absolute Section, Probate Searchroom, First Avenue House, 42-49 High Holborn, London WC1V 6NP. For a fee, they will check the index to decrees absolute and either provide a copy, or arrange a copy be sent to you. If you specifically want to get information about the grounds for divorce (in the 1890's this was basically either assault or desertion), then you have to ask them to include this detail. Further information can be found in the PRO, where case files are kept which include a case number - this can make applying for a copy of the decree cheaper. The case files at the PRO are in class J78 with an index in class J77 (a 'class' is just the PRO name for a group of similar documents).
