Hello All, My G/G/Grandfather is driving me nuts. His name was James SAUNDERS (with possibly CHARRAT/CHARRIT/CHARROT/GERARD as a middle name, and he was a carpenter in Portsea. If he was born there, he would probably have been apprenticed there. If not born Portsea, and I suspect that he wasn't because I cannot find a definite likely marriage, then he would have needed Settlement Papers. He and his wife, Elizabeth, had 4 children christened at St Mary's Portsea between 1831 and 1837; John, Robert, Matilda, and Eliza. His son, Robert, (a painter, my g/grandfather) married a Chatham girl in Rochester in 1856. I think, but have yet to prove, that John married Loiusa MOORES at Portsea, and Matilda married Henry CHARLO, again at Portsea. Of Eliza, no trace. My questions are: Does anyone know in which archive I would need to pay for a search request of Apprenticeship details and Settlements for Portsea. Will it be Portsmouth or Hampshire? And does anyone have access to the 1851 census for Portsea to see whether James was still there, or hopefully, his birthplace? Thanks. Yours Vicki Turner
