'Allo, 'allo I've brought this subject up before but am coming at it from a different angle. Does anyone else remember the French onion sellers riding bicycles through residential streets in Hampshire, with strings of onions on their handlebars? I'm very interested in knowing some more about them. Did they really come over on boats from France, bringing their bikes & wares with them or were they based in Southern England, using the black beret & neckerchief as an easily understood "trade mark"? Did they do much trade? I find it hard to believe that they could have made a decent living from it. Could it have been to do with desperate times after WW2? Did they go further afield than the southern ports? They used to come to the suburb of Shirley in Southampton but I'd be interested to know if they also visited the villages round about. Merci beaucoup Au revoir Maureen, NZ
