Sorry John No connection with any Hobbs in Kiwiland. Some of Joseph Wright's offspring (not Sarah)migrated to NZ though, probably an attempt to balance the Kiwi invasion. Our line came from the UK via Robert Hobbs convict ex London transported "Active" Third Fleet and Bridgette Eslin convict from Dublin Ireland transported "Sugar Cane". Their son Robert Hobbs Jnr and Sarah Wright born in settlement NSW; daughter of Joseph Wright ex London convict transported "Scarborough" First Fleet 1788 and Ellen Gott convict ex London transported "Neptune" Second fleet. Which goes to show we are the children of convicts (and proud of it). Hey John! we would love to hear your honest opinion; if there is such a distinct difference between Australian speech in WA as opposed to say Melbourne Sydney or Brisbane. Here it comes. quick gimme a beer before it starts. "When I was in the workforce having retired some four years ago and loving it" I can only go with my own experiences when I say; I was in regular phone contact with all of the other States and Territories as well as eyeball contact at State sales meetings and I must repeat I have never had any trouble understanding or detected any noticeable difference between the Western and Eastern States of Australia, maybe a few words are strange sometimes probably evolved in isolation, but not enough to make it a different dialect. Certainly not as different as you would find in the UK from village to village or Wales Scotland and Ireland and England, who are supposedly bilingual and have different dialects as does England, or as distinctly different as Kiwi to Australian speak. Even NZ has a different dialect in the North and South Islands probably due to the different source of their ancestors. I challenge any one to show me the differences that would allow you to identify the particular location of the speaker in Australia. In Queensland you wouldn't be able to pick them as they are coming across the border in droves to get a bit of the good life. As Queenslanders now, they have integrated any minor differences in speech with ours. I know because we are cockroaches ourselves having been born and bred in Sydney NSW, we have been swallowed by the cane toads. This goes for the wetbacks from Victoria as well. No point in asking poor old Seamus we understand he is an ex Pom, now a naturalised Aussie and I believe he is proud to be so. Sorry to hear about your recent illness Seamus "Get Well Soon and leave those nurses alone." Hi Brian, I live in Perth and have an obsession for accents and trying to pin down where people come from. The only thing that really gives away an Eastern Stater to me is the way they say the word "you've". Apart from that, the difference (if any) is so tiny that it more usually can be attributed to the natural difference of voices themselves; not accents. The word mentioned above can best be illustrated from the McCain advert on telly. The guy says "Ah McCain, your've done it again!" Well, that's how it sounds to me. He is an Eastern Stater. I would say "Yoo've done it again". Accents in England, more so in years gone by when people didn't travel so much, just about changed in each *street*.
