Looking at some old photographs earlier I discovered that you could with a bit of enhancement see some writing on the sailors hat bands at a family wedding. One of the hat's writing reads HM Destroyer the other --------Marines. Was there actually a ship called HMS Destroyer or is the rest of the inscription on the back of the hat? Would a hat actually of said HM Marines or again would the inscription carry on round the hat band. Any ideas? I tried a Google search but didn't get anywhere much, they mostly seem to be HM destroyer ..........? Thanks Bev

    3. Bev. I don't believe submarines had names until the beginning of the 2nd world war. So, would have had HM Submarines on the seaman's cap tally band. HM Destroyers would have been a war time requirement. Having said that, I seem to recall that during the 2nd war, Sailors cap tally bands just had HMS on them. Submariners never revealed the name of their ship on their tally bands. My father served on K 4, K16 & HMS Royalist during the first world war. I have photos of him in uniform with ship names on his cap tally band. Plus one with HMS Victory. If Ben Skeats reads this; he will be able to give us the correct answer.
