    1. [HAMPSHIRE-LIFE] Greyhound Racing
    2. Hi Listers, Just a thought on the message re greyhound racing! Did any one alsp realise that there used to be a greyhound track in Gosport, this would have been around the 1920's, although when it started I have no idea, it must have stopped in the middle of the 1930's as I know housing was put up then. Would be very interested if anyone has any further information, as my Gran used to keep a pair of racing greyhounds, and I have a picture of them with the track in the background. cheers, Den

    1. Re: [HAMPSHIRE-LIFE] Animal Story
    2. david dowd
    3. Dear Maragaret, that story is related in most books on British Birds. The geese nest in the Arctic, well away from British eyes, and their heads resemble the barnacle which comes ashore attached to driftwood. Older tales about this goose were that it grew as the gourd of some sea-shore tree by the Irish Sea, attached by its beak until fledged (hence 'Tree Goose') or was the result of a mushroom growing on rotting driftwood. These were useful legends because the geese could be eaten on fasting days as they were fruit or fungus and not flesh! Alas the stories were debunked in the 18th century when their nesting-sites were discovered in Spitzbergen and East Finland. Regards, David

    2. Margaret Usmar
    3. I have never heard of this story before, and would be interested if anyone else has: Lepas anatifera (goose barnacles) are responsible for "one of Britian's strangest animal beliefs", to quote the Christchurch Press of 7 June 2007 (this Christchurch being in New Zealand). The barnacle shell is supposed to resemble the head of the barnacle goose. As people rarely, if ever, witnessed geese nesting in Britain, apparently, they came up with the idea that geese emerged, fully fledges, from ships' planking and flew away. Margaret

Hello Margaret and list, It is the list admin who decides what is "inappropriate" for each list. Having said that, your message could only have been rejected if you were placed on moderated status, so that all of your messages are held for the admin's approval, and if you've only just subscribed (and have no previous record of flouncing the list rules) then one can only assume that the admin places everyone on moderated status when they first subscribe. You will need to clarify that with the list admin in question. All members of this list might care to take note that the "rules" for the list are fairly lax; the only thing I would ask is that your posts have some relevance to the county of Hampshire. It is worth noting, too, since we are on the subject, that this list is for non-genealogical topics; posts that are specifically genealogy-oriented (e.g. BDMs, names, dates, etc.) would be better directed to our "sister" list, ENG-HAMPSHIRE@rootsweb.com. Paying attention to this particular distinction between the lists will keep the archives more easily browsed/searched by future researchers, and perhaps lead to your finding more "cousins". Lastly, this message is for information only; do NOT reply to it on the list. As always you are welcome to contact me at HAMPSHIE-LIFE-admin@rootsweb.com if you have any comments or questions. Regards, Davy Cannon, Dorchester, Dorset. List Admin, Hampshire-Life List.
