A bit of humour that was sent us, and albeit it American , there is a thread on accents at present we thought we would share this with you all. Bless your little cotton socks!!!! Chris and Caroline Someone once noted that a Southerner can get away with the most awful kind of insult just as long as it's prefaced with the words, "Bless her heart" or "Bless his heart." As in, "Bless his heart, if they put his brain on the head of a pin, it'd roll around like a BB on a six lane highway." Or, "Bless her heart, she's so blind, she couldn't see the moon shine." There are also the sneakier ones : "You know, it's amazing that even though she had that baby 7 months after they were married, bless her heart, it weighed 10 pounds." As long as the heart is sufficiently blessed, the insult can't be all that bad. I was thinking about this the other day when a friend was telling about her new Northern friend who was upset because her toddler is just beginning to talk and he has ! a Southern accent. My friend, who is very kind and, bless her heart, cannot do a thing about those thighs of hers, was justifiably miffed about this. After all, this woman had CHOSEN to move to the South a couple of years ago. "Can you believe it?" she said to her friend. "A child of mine is going to be taaaallllkkin' liiiike thiiiissss." Now, don't get me wrong. Some of my dearest friends are from the North, bless their hearts. I welcome their perspective, their friendships and their recipes for authentic Northern Italian food. I've even gotten past their endless complaints that you can't find good bread down here. And the heathens, bless their hearts, don't like cornbread! The ones that really gore my ox are the native Southerners who have begun to act almost embarrassed about their speech. We've already lost too much. I was raised to swanee, not swear, but you hardly ever! hear anyone say that anymore, I swanee you don't. And I've caught myself thinking twice before saying something is "right much"; "right close" or "right good" because non-natives think this is right funny indeed. I have a friend from Bawston who thinks it's hilarious when I say I've got to "carry" my daughter to the doctor or "cut off" the light. She also gets a giggle every time I am "fixing" to do something. And, bless their hearts, they don't know where "over yonder" is, or what, "I reckon" means. My personal favorite was my aunt saying, "Bless her heart, she can't help being ugly, but she could've stayed home." To those of you who're still a little embarrassed by your Southernness: Take two tent revivals and a dose of sausage gravy and call me in the morning. Bless your heart! And to those of you who are still having a hard time understanding all this Southern stuff, bless your hearts, I hear they're fixin' to have classes on Southernness as a second language! Hi, I do remember that program and it was very interesting. Wasn't it about English around the world and it was on the educational channel. When I was working, a fellow came into the office to do some repairs on the typewriters. He spoke with a broad Bristolian accent. I asked him when did he come to Canada. He told me that he came over from Bermuda and his family had lived on that island since the 1600's. Our French Canadians speak, sometimes, a very old french which is not longer used in France. As people move around the world, they bring their speech with them but pick up the local words as well and then it becomes unique to that area. If you contact your local educational channel, I'm sure they could rebroadcast it. This thread in general and the posting regarding Southern US speech in particular has prompted a memory from many years ago. Perhaps 20-25 years ago, a programme or series of programmes aired on US Television. Although I cannot recall the title, it addressed linguistics and music in the USA and the origins of them. For example, the speech of those in the South could be directly related back to certain locations in the UK and the origins of music of the Blueridge and Ozarks were said to be derived from the old Troubadours. At that time, there was an isolated community in Delaware or Maryland whose speech was so British-like, they were often mistaken for foreigners. I'm very keen to identify this series and hopefully locate a copy of it, if possible. Do any of you US subscribers remember it, and if so, the name of it? Thanks Chris. I did not know anything about this until your message arrived. A quick look at the TV news revealed that at least 2 people have lost there lives many have been injured and 388 homes have been lost in the bush fires. This is Canberras worst disaster. Hi all The indexing of the above continues and at present 1855 to start of 1945 is complete which so far is just under 34000 names. The fiche only go to 1953. Happy to give a free look up from the index. Take care Linda & Tony
Hi Linda & Tony We think you have the wrong message, the origin of this thread was to point out the cultural differences highlighted by accents. We did not intend to criticise or degrade those who were different. Boy that thought never entered our minds, our concern was that different official languages and dialects in one society presented many problems. The thread spread to Australia, NZ, Canada and the United States all with intelligent contributions from very nice people. I personally stated that Aust in general did not have any dialects only Australian English, in a country as large as the whole of Europe it would have been excusable if different dialects had evolved in isolation, but this didn't happen. We have received many emails in support of our stand both privately and via the List with one only dissent and that was marginal. Hi May Thank you for your reply, what you've said exactly proves my point, I would never say "you have" sounding like "your've", I say it sounding like yoo've same as you, and I have never been away from the Eastern States of Australia. Maureen has though she is much travelled thanks to her skills in the lawn bowls world. She has agreed in that she has not detected any noticeable difference in accent all over Australia including Tasmania. Hey it seems that one the natives is getting restless again, perhaps we should drop this thread before we get into trouble, what we are discussing now is not probably strictly to do with Hampshire Life exactly, but it is resulting from our English ancestry of which we are justly proud. We thank Chris and Caroline for allowing us the indulgence. We have thoroughly enjoyed the debate. (see we are self regulating). My Grandpa, born in Worcester, of Hampshire parents, was said to talk "posh" by his neighbours here in Nottingham ... I love to hear accents ... Does anyone know of a web site where I can hear some "old-Hampshire" language .. ? .... TIA .... Sue I think there may be some confusion here............ The topic about accents is about just that accents, and nobody is condemning race, creed or religion. It is just the differences between the accents that can be found in the local communities or our countries. As David Parker and Tony have both said it benefits the communities.
