Hi David, In Australia they usually calls the girls "sheilas" like some English fellows call them "birds". Americans call them "babes" and "dolls". What do Canadians call them -- "chicks"? "Slim Bruce" I would think is a male nurse, etc. LOL, Edna - Ottawa where the sun always shines ----------------------------------------------------- ----- Original Message ----- > From: "David Parker" <parker3250@rogers.com> > To: "Edna & Ken" <ekbrits@sympatico.ca>; <HAMPSHIRE-LIFE-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Tuesday, January 21, 2003 10:49 AM > Subject: Re: [HantsLife] Seamus > > > > Good news indeed. > > > > But did not someone suggest that English is spoken in Australia. > > If so, what in Shakespeare's good name, are "a buxom Sheila" and "a slim > > Bruce" ??? Good news indeed. But did not someone suggest that English is spoken in Australia. If so, what in Shakespeare's good name, are "a buxom Sheila" and "a slim Bruce" ??? Not even Pam Ayers would use the phrases, and they caused a lot of grief to my Spell Check!! Incidentally what are the masculine equivalents ? Good News: " Seamus is awake and talking and should move from ICU to a normal ward tomorrow. Mrs Seamus says he looks better than she was expecting at this stage. He was hoping for a buxom sheila but has got a slim bruce as his nurse (Mrs Seamus used more descriptive language that only you ladies would have understood). He is likely to be in hospital for 10 days." Edna - Ottawa
Ahhhh David, David, David, I'm very afraid that's all it's going to be......"in your dreams' =:) RE: >From the picture, Chris, it looked like it was a case of "rain stopped play". I must admit though, having seen it, it is an impressive sight or site. With reference to the email with the phrase below, which it seems that Tony and Linda have taken "exception to" This was in NO WAY meant as racist, or anything else BUR to explain the differences in nationality that can be found in ANY one street in the UK today, and also in many other countries. And as we have stated they are classed as locals meaning that they ARE part of the community we all live in. Everybody has their own interpretations and beliefs and we do not with to condone or condemn these beliefs. Especially as two of our oldest friends are Chinese and we have to Yugoslavian friends as well. Hi All, I was lucky enough to visit Hampshire for just two days on my visit in 2000. I loved the accent and the people I met in Kingsclere, all so helpful and kind. When I first came to Australia I noticed an upward inflection at the end of sentences, that was in N.S.W. I thought the Queenslanders sounded like they came southern U.S.A. Now I don't notice any difference except in pronunciation of different words. I was quiet annoyed when in England that no one thought I came from Oz, I had to go around saying G'Day :o). Good health and Peace to all. I tend to pick up the accents of anyone I am talking with for 10 minutes, be they English, southern or whatever. I do not consiously do this. I was born and raised in Florida and I do not sound southern and people often ask me where I am from after I talk with them for a few minutes thinking I am from somewhere near their town. But, I swanee, ya'll got me over they're with that belle speakin the true language of the south. I can't do it unless I'm around folks, but the ones I do not like to be around much are from the new England states with their pahk the cah and go to the pahtty. Not trying to make any favors, but I do love to talk to people with a british accent because I love to speak with it and cannot do it unless I have been talking with someone. I cannot fake it. So, if any of you come to Florida, look me up so I can talk like the Brits, even the Cockney languages. :o) Margaret Never compromise what's right and uphold your family name. Hi All I have posted this before but have now run out of look ups so thought I would put it up again. I have the 1901 census for London on Cds so if anyone thinks they have found relatives on the PRO 1901 in London but does not want to keep paying out to find the address and who the rest of the family were I will do a look up. I need name, age and place of birth of the subject so I can do a person search on the PRO and then I can pick up the rest of the details from the Cds.. Sallie
Yes Stephen. that's why you're all emigrating up here, you mean to say all Oz speak like Genie Little or Paul Hogan ever watched the old Chips Raphety movies. you can tell a southerner by the pushy way he wants to change things, they immigrate to the north because its better and then want to make it like down south. that's just stupidity, we may be slow but are sure they should stay home. They are changeing our accent.
