    3. Hi Bev Are you in or have access to North London? At the Colindale newspaper library (part of the British Library) you can access microfilm of almost every local and national newspaper. I found three reports of an inquest from Exeter, ca 1900, each of which gave a slightly different slant on a similar event involving one of my gt. uncles. Best wishes Ron Dunning

    3. Beverley wrote, " Where would I look for a divorce as this seems the only possible answer?" I doubt that very much Beverley, divorce was very rare - it is more likely that they had split up, hence him being listed as 'single' in 1891 (unless of course it was just a mistake in the enumeration?). By 1901 of course Fanny would have been a widow and perfectly entitled to remarry. 3. I've found one!!!!! I've found one!!!!! There's always a problem in passed on family tales, but don't discount them totally. Mum has always insisted that she could remember family talk of one of her uncles being killed on the railway whilst working on one of those manual truck thingys. By a long very slow process of elimination and lots of failures we finally homed in what looked like a possible candidate and sent for the certificate, not really expecting a result. Entry of Death 24.6.1900 London & South Western Railway near Fontley Fareham. Andrew WINTER 42 years. Platelayer. Accidentally killed by a train. Certificate received from Leonard Warner. Deputy Coroner of Hants. Inquest held 2nd July 1900. Three questions for the list. 1. Where, or can we get a copy of the inquest ? 2. What would the local paper for the area be? This one's a bit more complicated Andrew married Fanny EMMETT (23) on July 24 1886 at Droxford Register Office. On the 1891 he is given as single and at home. One the 1901 I find what appears to be the same Fanny listed as EMMETT not WINTER single and living with her parents. 3. Where would I look for a divorce as this seems the only possible answer? Thanks Bev

    1. [HantsLife] Divorce - Separation in UK 1890's
    2. Edna & Ken
    3. SKS put this on the list a while ago... Edna - Ottawa ------------------------------- Try writing to the Principal Registry of the Family Division, Decree Absolute Section, Probate Searchroom, First Avenue House, 42-49 High Holborn, London WC1V 6NP. For a fee, they will check the index to decrees absolute and either provide a copy, or arrange a copy be sent to you. If you specifically want to get information about the grounds for divorce (in the 1890's this was basically either assault or desertion), then you have to ask them to include this detail. Further information can be found in the PRO, where case files are kept which include a case number - this can make applying for a copy of the decree cheaper. The case files at the PRO are in class J78 with an index in class J77 (a 'class' is just the PRO name for a group of similar documents).

    1. [HantsLife] Antiques and genealogy programme
    2. Using family heirlooms to trace ancestors Dear List Members, I am writing from a television production company to see if anyone would like to be involved in a family history TV programme with a difference. The programme is called 'Antiques Ghostshow' and aims to trace participants' forebears through the heirlooms they've left behind. The team of investigators include a genealogist, an antiques expert and, somewhat unusually, a psychic. The psychic claims to be able to pick up information embedded in the heirlooms about their original owners (and turns out to be surprisingly accurate!); the other two experts pursue the leads he provides, as well as more traditional lines of enquiry, so that together they can build up a fuller picture of the identity and life of the ancestor in question. The item needn't be of great financial value - a cigarette case, some jewellery, a tool of some kind, a piece of furniture - anything that was personal and has been kept in the family could hold a wealth of hidden secrets about your forefathers. So if you have a family heirloom and would like to see if our team of experts can use it to help you trace more of your family history, please get in touch, either by phone, email or online form: Tel: 020 7515 6006 Email: ipmlnet@aol.com - please send us a contact telephone number and a brief description of your heirloom. Website: www.livingtv.co.uk/ghostshow I hope to hear from some of you soon. David
