I assume that any 18C and 19C village/small town clergyman knew his congregation, and knew if parents at the time of a baptism were in fact married. Nevertheless I have noticed that parish records sometimes list the surname of a child as that of the father even though the parents were not married. This has raised in my mind a number of question directly and indirectly associated with that. Was this because he, the clergyman, knew of their plans to get married? Did he do it out of kindness ? Did he have authority to refuse to give the child the father's surname as the child's surname ? Did he have any authority to prevent an single mother naming the father by using his name as a middle name? Is the entry of "bb" an arbitrary one? Was its use determined by the class of the mother? Was it ever officially stopped? Any information would be appreciated I have heard that a genealogist has related the birth dates of the first child to the marriage dates and has calculated the percentage of brides who were at the time of their marriage apparently pregnant - i.e. the birth took place within 6months of the marriage - or were already mothers - i.e. the birth took place before the marriage date. Does anyone have those numbers? In case you are wondering I am aware of the human gestation period is 275 day or roughly nine months. Thanking you David. Last year/I paid for this information. I got a Death Certificate A.H.W.Broomfield a nephew was the informant. Is this Alfred,as initials are confusing.?? Does that mean that he was the only one with information regarding her.?? or was he just a neightbor,at # 38 Brassey rd,??A customer or renter of his pub.?? I recent message it appears that the Broomfields operated more than one pub.?? She died of Toxianemia.a Widow of a man who operated a pub.[Blatchford family operated more than one pub] Was the NEPHEW actually connected to the Blatchford family. Her family or shall i say all her uncles [Head family] listed pub/Salisbury Inn/Ship in Distress/ as there residence. While Lily May [Head] Blatchford, was from Christchurch [burton] area George Tame Blatchford deceased husband] was from,Southampton.#25 queens rd.born there in 1884. Was one of the Broomfields a Postal Inspector. who had two childred abt 50 years old today. his wife was referred to as "phil" he was the relative of my mom.he died in the early 80's. There was shortly after his death a Female relative who returned fron South Africa a wealthy widow.she soon died also. This was my mothers Aunt. This may sound silly to you but. I was born in Weymouth and have lived most of my 57 years in America. I really do think that this is the path to finding what is left of my English Relatives, that are still alive. I will add more of what I have found, hoping to mak a connection.feels like a jig-saw puzzle to me.but more and more pieces ae coming together. keep on-keeping on-never quit.
Had this sent in by Vicki and thought it might amuse some of you Chris and Caroline The Census It was the first day of census, and all through the land; The pollster was ready, a black book in hand. He mounted his horse for a long dusty ride; His book and some quills were tucked close by his side. A long winding ride down a road barely there; Toward the smell of fresh bread wafting, up through the air. The woman was tired, with lines on her face; And wisps of brown hair she tucked back into place. She gave him some water, as they sat at the table; And she answered his questions -- the best she was able. He asked of her children. Yes, she had quite a few; The oldest was twenty, the youngest not two. She held up a toddler with cheeks round and red; His sister, she whispered, was napping in bed. She noted each person who lived there with pride; And she felt the faint stirrings of the wee one inside. He noted the sex, the color, the age. The marks from the quill soon filled up the page. At the number of children, she nodded her head; And saw her lips quiver for the three that were dead. The places of birth she "never forgot"; Was it Ashford? or Lewisham? or Rochester -- or not? They came from England, of that she was clear; But she wasn't quite sure just how long they'd been here. They spoke of employment, of schooling and such; They could read some, and write some, though really not much. When the questions were answered, his job there was done; So he mounted his horse and he rode toward the sun. We can almost imagine his voice loud and clear; "May God bless you all for another ten years." Now picture a time warp -- its' now you and me; As we search for the people on our family tree. We squint at the census and scroll down so slow; As we search for that entry from long, long ago. Could they only imagine on that long ago day; That the entries they made would effect us this way? If they knew, would they wonder at the yearning we feel; And the searching that makes them so increasingly real. We can hear if we listen the words they impart; Through their blood in our veins and their voice in our heart. -- Anonymous --- All of our Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Hello Roger, I think that this might, just might, be your Maria BROOMFIELD living with her daughter in 1881 and both widowed. Even though both of their names have been given as Mary Ann and Mary respectively, both said that they were born in Lyndhurst, a couple of miles up the road from Minstead. Mary Ann's birthdate is right, but her daughter's seems to be a bit out. The transcriber could have mistaken a 2 for a 3?? The only Maria BROOMFIELDs in the census are much too young and none that I could find born in Minstead. These spam mailings are part of life I am afraid, we get an average of around 30 a day now and a lot of them are from Nigeria, and other African places. They are all fraudulent and the best place for them is in the bin! There are some agencies that take this seriously especially the Nigerian ones and these should be saved to your hard drive then included as an attachment and sent on to fraud.alert@met.police.uk NOTE This is for UK subscribers only Each country has its own authorities.
