Many could have lost more than a tooth if that were the actual site of the Roman Invasion. Caesar's (55BC) landing was in Kent, and Historians argue if the real, the full invasion by Claudius (43AD) , was also in Kent or perhaps in Sussex. Although The Hants/Sussex site would have been a longer journey across the Channel, the Atrebates who lived in that region were friendly to the Romans, and the Romans quite rightly were somewhat in awe of the Brits, and they, an army of some 40,000, in fact initially refused to disembark. This is not an area in which I would claim any expertise, so I would be please to be corrected if I am in error If the Romans, like you and most of us, had a sweet tooth, perhaps there invaded to corner the world market of Mead. I need to apologise to David Parker in Canada for accusing him of knowing answers he didn't, and for *not* congratulating John Sutton from Australia who *did* know when sweet rationing ended!!! Hi Edna, The Queen acceded to the throne on 6 Feb 1952 and was crowned on 2 Jun 1953. I was in the Tower during May/June 1952, and I remember we lined the streets of London, for some ceremony, which I thought was the proclamation of the Coronation, with drums beating, flags flying and bayonets fixed. . Although the war ended in 1945, rationing did not. Food was safely reaching Britain again in a reasonable amounts, but much of it had to be diverted to feed Europe, which was in a much worse state the Britain. Clothing rationing lasted from 1941 to 1949, and food rationing from Jan 1940 to 1954 - meat was the last item to come off - so it was still in effect at the time of the coronation. There is a story that a particular village that had always celebrated a Coronation with roasting an ox, had to get special permission. I believe that some items that were de-rationed were re-rationed - bread ? - at the time of the Korean war. Petrol rationing was re-imposed at the time of the Suez War. "Those were the days, my friend, We thought they would never end." Yes, of course that terrible disaster happened at the same time. I remember two children joining my primary school from Canvey Island. No John Sutton got it right - sweets cam off rationing on that day. I am obviously older than many of you, for at that time -1953- I was in the Army in Germany. I do know specifically to what you are referring. Moya. but February 1953 was the time of the floods in Canvey in which 307 people were killed. My fathe, who was working at HMS Daedalus, Lee-on-Solent, was involved in the evacuation and rescue efforts in Canvey using DUKWS. The unit to which I was attached in Delmenhorst also sent mem to help in the rescue in Holland, where 1835 people drowned. Somehow I do not think that my answer is what you were looking for, but it brought back a few memories to me.
