Guess us Colonials cant be so bad after all! Wide open spaces out here, a land of only about 4 millions humans!! Why live in the old country when you can spread your wings out here! Cost of living cheaper... houses especially... I have an old colonial cottage built 1882. just being restored... bought for about $80.000. eleven years ago, when we moved up from Wellington.(Capital) now living in rural area.. Not near Happy Valley where Maureen is, over the Rimutaka's in the Wairarapa...best place to be! To think the family home in London, had we still owned it, would be worth over 1 million pounds. Had my pen friend over here the other year from Purley, we took her for a drive to Martinborough, she spent most of the time looking behind, then I said what are you looking at.. she said, no other cars on the roads, I said this is New Zealand its always like this! Now in England. where can you drive and not have another car behind you or in front!! In your dreams !! New Zealanders are generally a helpful, cheerful bunch...and chatty... We have hot hot summers, and cold cold winters...but love it. love the lifestyle.. so bye bye for now, raining for the first time in months. not mowed lawns for about 3 months!!! I have an acre of land as well, orchard. goats. hens. cat. and dogs!! We had Hot Air Balloons last week.. lovely to watch over the cottage... adele in Clareville
Here in the UK, it seems as far as genealogy is concerned, not to make a great deal of difference as the information gathered is not 'published' - that is, not offered freely for sale on the open market for profit. The passing of basic data from one person to another under the heading of personal research is permitted. Companies and large organisations that use personal information for business purposes are required to be licensed because they 'publish'; indeed some profit entirely by the selling of this material. I understand that all the Local History Societies have been told they do not need to be licensed so long as all the information they gather is held on a maximum of two computers and is again, not 'published'. I have also checked with three different Archive/Record Offices and not one considers this to be a problem or an issue. Whether the law dictates or not, I would like to think we are all sensitive enough to consider asking permission of the living before passing basic details about them to third parties, but even so, it is worth considering that there is likely to be far more sensitive information held about us all on computer somewhere, than the average genealogist would be able to gather in their researches!! Technically, if you take a photograph of any High Street anywhere in the UK you are legally not permitted to 'publish' that photo without first asking permission of everyone within shot - realistically this does not happen and as far as is known, no prosecution has ever been brought. I am told that here in the UK you are still permitted to buy copies of BMD certificates for anyone living or dead. It is for this reason that it is no longer possible to apply for a driving license or passport on production of a birth certificate as was so graphically illustrated in the film "Day of the Jackal" !!!! Of course if anyone knows anything different........................... Chris and Caroline LIST ADMINISTRATORS HAMPSHIRE-LIFE is located on Lists2. The List2 server has been down for a couple of days and no mail is being sent out by that server. Since the server is partially back up, and you were able to access your tools page, the address was probably added and the confirmation mail is in the queue waiting to be sent when the server is fully restored.
