    1. [HantsLife] Easter greetings!
    2. marp
    3. I would like to wish all my many friends around the world and here in the UK a very Happy Easter. For so many of us now so far from our native County of Hampshire, this is probably the time we miss the area the most - the trees and hedgerows now coloured a delicate and fresh green, creating dappled cool shade for shy primroses and later, stately cowslips. Gardens are bright with grape hyacinths, nodding daffodils and elegant tulips. Drifts of pink and white cherry, apple and pear blossom are balanced by the deep blue of blue bells, forget-me-nots and of course the deliciously scented bright red, yellow and orange wallflowers. All those birds the boys used to gather eggs from the nests of - are dashing back and forth putting the finishing touches to their new homes before the families arrive. Swans, pheasants, partridge and moorhens are all hunkered down in fields and along riverbanks patiently awaiting their new broods. The sun is shining, tempting children out of doors for the first time without their winter coats - Oh! that sense of freedom - remember it? I am suddenly back to being a child in Winchester again and, on my way to school, picking kingcups,pussy-willow and sticky buds; watching the water vole in the river near King Alfred's arch and the pair of Kingfishers that darted across the river by the tiny weir there. What else have I forgotten? Moya Page (nee Banting) researching BANTING and PERREN in Hampshire

    3. Hello David, I'm not an expert on WW1 but spent some time at the PRO recently looking for one of my relatives. The PRO has done some work on the WW1 records recently. You can look up all the possiblities in the medal roll index (if your relative survived the war he will have at least one medal) which are arranged alphabetically. These give you the soldier's regiment, rank and number and any medals earned. It also gives you a medal roll reference which I believe can be converted to a PRO reference. Apparently following this through will give you the battalion. (The index gave the battalions for my possibilities so I didn't have to do this). You can then search the burnt records for the service records of your possibilities. If you're lucky, enough of them might have survived for you to be able to narrow them down or even, if you're very lucky, to find the actual soldier. It took me most of the day but I did come to a conclusion. My relative's records weren't there but there were enough others there for me to eliminate all but one. You might get some more expert advice on the Great War maillist - GREATWAR-L-request@rootsweb.com or GREATWAR-D-request@rootsweb.com. Regards, Mary. ----- Original Message ----- From: "David Parker" <parker3250@rogers.com> To: <HAMPSHIRE-LIFE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, April 16, 2003 2:42 PM Subject: [HantsLife] WW l a fuller explanation of the problem > Let me explain the situation and my problem more fully. You have a male relative, whose name, parents, place and date of birth you know. You may not know his next of kin, as he may have married unbeknowst to you, (as the CWGC search revealed of one of mine). He is, shall we say, a Hampshire man, so he may have joined the Hampshire Regiment (as one of mine did). But that is not always the case. He could have joined a machine gun regiment (as one of mine did), the Artillery, the Guards, the Cavalry, the Rifle Brigade, another County Regiment (as one of mine did), or a "Pal's" Battalion, or one of the many Corps, including the RFC. And I have not even included the Royal Navy. If you do not know the Regiment/Corps and the individual's service number, then a PRO search could be, I suggest, seemingly endless if not impossible, particularly if the records have been destroyed. I have learnt that certain Regiments have had published a list of all who fought ! > in that war, some of which , but not the Hampshire Regiment, have been published, and can be purchased, on CD, but I do not know what they list, so do not know if it is possible to indentify an individual without his service number. I presume the Regiments have such records in their own libraries/museums, but can a search be made, and how specific must one be ? If for example I have 30 men of the same surname who are of eligible age would a search be possible ? If I have three people of the same name, for example William Giles, all born in Wield, on different dates to different parents, could I indentify them ? Are there other source of information ? Am I wasting my time ? > I am hoping someone has been there and done that, and can show me and obviously others who have the same problem, where and how. > > Thanking you all. > > ______________________________

    3. Hello Copies of the area's The National Roll Books of the Great War are usually to be found in Family History and Local Collection Libraries. Archive CD Books have also got some of them on CD. http://www.rod-neep.co.uk/acatalog/Archive_CD_Books_War_Records_36.html Otherwise it is a case of visiting the PRO at Kew http://www.pro.gov.uk/ to search for Soldiers Service Records ( if they were not been destroyed in the 2nd WWar) or hiring a researcher to do it for you. This site: http://www.mod.uk/contacts/records_army.htm has lots of useful info and addresses. Yours Vicki Turner

    3. Hi To satisfy all those who have complained about it in the past, the second phase of separating the TOMASIN Family History, Stragglers Skittles Team and Clevedon Jazz Club web sites has now been completed. This process, which has resulted in four separate sites, has involved major re-thinks and a new design for each site. www.tomasin.org.uk provides a gateway to the other sites, which also stand alone for surfers with a specific interest. www.family.tomasin.org.uk is the redesigned TOMASIN Family History Project site. It includes references to all known spouses and siblings, a 'family tree', photo's and biographical notes of family members, links to other sites and mailing lists, and more. www.stragglers.tomasin.org.uk is the new Stragglers Skittles Team site through which you can follow the teams fortunes. www.clevedonjazzclub.co.uk is the redesigned site any jazz lovers I haven't upset. Good Huntin' Trevor Tomasin Visit http://www.family.tomasin.org.uk to see if we could be 'Cousins'! I maintain a database of all enquiries and will report connections. Researching - BANTON - BULL - COLLIS - LEAVERS - HOPKINS - KNIGHT - MARTIN - MOODY - PERKIS - PUNCH - PURCHES - STRETTEN - TAYLOR - TOMASIN - VINCENT - WILLIAMS & Derivatives. 3. Hi Listers, I have just had my five minutes of fame on Portsmouth TV News this afternoon and we can't get it in Portchester! They are doing a report on local Titanic victims. It was an interview with Lucy Warhurst at Wymering Church about my fathers cousin Charles Valentine Clarke.Tomorrow (15 April) is the 91st anniversary of the Titanic disaster and there is a plaque that was placed in the Church by his wife Ada Marie in memory of him. It will be broadcast tomorrow at 1pm on Portsmouth Today and again at 5.30pm on Portsmouth Tonight. I am desperately trying to find someone to tape it for me. Is there anyone out there that can help. you can have my autograph for free :-) Regards Bazzer Portchester Fareham http://www.clarkeology.com --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 3. Hi Chris and Caroline, I was at the semi final. Great day. Not strictly genealogy but the Saints History is so tied up with the history of the Bells of, and the Church of St Marys Southampton that I hope I will be forgiven. The Hampshire Record Office published a booklet in 1999 (no 9 in the Hampshire Papers Series) called "Association Football in Hampshire until 1914" by Norman Gannaway for those who think that members of their families might have been involved in the sport. I don't know if it is still available but it was priced at £1 from the Record Office in Winchester. Yours Vicki
