If anyone has access to Kingston parish records (I don't think they are on Tony and Linda's list) and is willing to check a date for me, I am looking for the burial of Mary Emily Oadham Purvis, who according to family records died in 1796, age 4 years. Thanks very much Ron Dunning
Those mothers on the list filling in forms should take note of this!! Sent in by Margaret Sessions. Chris and Caroline For Mothers (Author Unknown) A few months ago, when I was picking up the children at school, another mother I knew well rushed up to me. Emily was fuming with indignation. "Do you know what you and I are?" she demanded. Before I could answer, and I didn't really have one handy, she blurted out the reason for her question. It seemed she had just returned from renewing her driver's license at the County Clerk's office. Asked by the woman clerk to state her occupation. Emily had hesitated, uncertain how to classify herself. What I mean is, "explained the recorder, "Do you have a job, or are you just a .....?" Of course I have a job," snapped Emily. "I'm a mother." "We don't list 'mother' as an occupation...'housewife' covers it," said the recorder emphatically. I forgot all about her story until one day I found myself in the same situation, this time at our own Town Hall. The clerk was obviously a career woman, poised, efficient, and possessed of a high-sounding title like official Interrogator or Town Registrar. And what is your occupation?" she probed. What made me say it, I do not know. The words simply popped out. "I'm a Research Associate in the field of Child Development and Human Relations." The clerk paused, ball-point pen frozen in midair, and looked up as though she had not heard right. I repeated the title slowly, emphasizing the most significant words. Then I stared with wonder as my pompous pronouncement was written in bold, black ink on the official questionnaire. "Might I ask," said the clerk with new interest, "just what you do in your field?? Coolly, without any trace of fluster in my voice, I heard myself reply, "I have a continuing program of research (what mother doesn't) in the laboratory and in the field (normally I would have said indoors and out). I'm working for my Masters (the whole darned family) and already have four credits (all daughters)." "Of course, the job is one of the most demanding in the humanities (any mother care to disagree?) and I often work 14 hours a day (24 is more like it). But the job is more challenging than most run-of-the-mill careers and the rewards are in satisfaction rather than just money." There was an increasing note of respect in the clerk's voice as she completed the form, stood up, and personally ushered me to the door. As I drove into our driveway, buoyed up by my glamorous new career, I was greeted by my lab assistants -ages 13, 7, and 3. Upstairs I could hear our new experimental model (6 months) in the child-development program, testing out a new vocal pattern. I felt triumphant! I had scored a beat on bureaucracy! And I had gone on the official records as someone more distinguished and indispensable to mankind than "just another mother." Motherhood...what a glorious career. Especially when there's a title on the door. Send this to another Mother you know. Whether a stay at home Mom or a career Mom, we should all carry this title. This says it all, don't you think? Dr Barnes Wallis was bon in Ripley, Derbyshire in 1887. Two years later his family moved to London, and he was educated at Horsham.. His first appearance in Hampshire was in 1906 when he joined the firm of Samuel White in the IOW. In 1913 he joined Vickers in Cowes, IOW. Although he failed the eye sight test in 1914, he later enlisted by memorizing the eye test board. After that war he continued to work for Vickers. Of course we all remember him as the designer of the Wellesley, Wellington, Warwick and Windsor bombers, all manufactured by Vickers and his designing of the bouncing bomb used on the Dams. He was a greatly underrated designer. In Titchfield, on the west side of Titchfield Hill is Barnes Wallis Road. We have had quite a few people asking about a sudden increase in spam mailings, even though they do not have a website with their email address on. A lot of this is caused by Rootsweb signing over control to Ancestry Com and over the past month the amount of spam has overtaken the amount of emails we receive. Out of 38 emails 20 of them are spam. We have contacted Rootsweb about this but they do not seem to care. So we recommend that you seriously consider installing MAILWASHER which is free from http://www.mailwasher.net this is a simple little programme just over 1.4Mb and you can preview your emails before you download them, bounce, delete and blacklist spam, and put your friends into a separate list. It works perfectly with Outlook Express but cannot comment on other email programmes. All of the spam is deleted before you download them from your ISP. A full tutorial can be found on Mailwashers website which explains everything, and the programme is freeware though the writer does ask for a small contribution to help improve it. We are not connected with Mailwasher in any way but have found it a brilliant piece of software to combat spam. All comments on this please off list. Hello Everybody, Moya's message reminded me of my R.A.F. days in 1950's when I was stationed at Litchfield. Lancaster bombers were repaired there and one day I had the "pleasure" of accepting a ride in one after it had been repaired. The pilot was a Pole and don't believe it if people say Lancaster bombers were incapable of aerobatics. Rod Whale, Andover.
This week is the 60th anniversary of the Dambusters raid, and I am reminded of it as I am sitting here at home in Lincolnshire having just seen a Lancaster bomber and a Spitfire fly over my house; they are returning to base having done a fly past over the City of Lincoln, about 4 miles from the Scampton air base where the Dambusters flew from. The Hampshire interest is that one of my neighbours as a child was the mother of a dambuster - sadly he was killed, but his mother's greatest pride was that she went to Buckingham Palace to receive his VC. It is wonderful to hear the sound of a 'proper' aeroplane again - they have such a throaty roar, but would not be very comfortable or very quick as getting us around the world today, still great to hear them again. The Dambusters have a web site at: http://www.dambusters.org.uk/ Moya Page (nee Banting) researching BANTING and PERREN in Hampshire

Hillier's, the world renowned nursery and plantsmen, have their headquarters on Romsey Road, Winchester. You never know, perhaps the person compiling the list you looked at Maureen was a keen gardener - and like many I know today who refer to these wonderful growers as "St. Hillier's" !!! I did look on Hillier's web site - http://www.hillier.co.uk/index.html to see if there was mention of being bombed during WW2, but as you might guess - nothing. So, this morning I rang them but the young girl who answered the phone was somewhat thrown by my question, however she assured me someone would ring me tomorrow with the answer! Personally, I doubt a bomb dropped on Romsey Road, Winchester as I think there were only two 'strays' dropped when damaged German planes, returning from raids on Southampton, dropped their remaining bombs. I think these were nearer the centre of the town. Moya Page (nee Banting) researching BANTING and PERREN in Hampshire
Serendipity!!! While searching for information for a lister, I cam across this page on the Hantsweb pages. http://www.hants.gov.uk/record-office/imm.html Here are documents relating to immigrants to Hampshire from all over the world; some as early as 1699!!! This was on the IOW list and thought it might raise a grin or two and help to uncomplicate those genealogy questions!!! Duh! Chris and Caroline Many many years ago when I was twenty three, I got married to a widow who was pretty as could be. This widow had a grown-up daughter who had hair of red. My father fell in love with her, And soon the two were wed. This made my dad my son-in-law And changed my very life. My daughter was my mother, For she was my father's wife. To complicate the matters worse, Although it brought me joy, I soon became the father Of a bouncing baby boy. My little baby then became A brother-in-law to dad. And so became my uncle, Though it made me very sad. For if he was my uncle, Then that also made him brother To the widow's grown-up daughter Who, of course, was my step-mother. Father's wife then had a son, Who kept them on the run. And he became my grandson, For he was my daughter's son. My wife is now my mother's mother And it makes me blue. Because, although she is my wife, She is my grandma too. If my wife is my grandmother, Then I am her grandchild. And every time I think of it, It simply drives me wild. For now I have become The strangest case you ever saw. As the husband of my grandmother, I am my own grandpa. --- All of our Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
