Hi all (again) I have just been informed by the list owners of HAMPSHIREL, that the site I posted was commercial, sorry if I have offended anyone by posting the address, I just thought people might enjoy looking at the old photos as much as I did, and I was also told there was nothing Hampshire related, so once again I apologise for misguiding people. Suzanne, Deciding to go back to just lurking in the back ground of the lists lol
Sorry all, sent the wrong address, http://www.ancientfaces.com/ Suzanne
I'm not sure if anyone knows of this site, but I found it while just surfing around the WWW, and what a little Jewel it is. I found a few Hampshire related pictures but none of my family, however i thought i would share it with you all, http://www.ancientfaces.com/index.cfm, Hope you all enjoy, Suzanne

My husband's Great grandfather, Nathan Wilson, came down to Bradley from Ayrshire in the late 1870's. They endured a lot of problems but he stayed! His 1st wife is buried in the churchyard there. His second wife supposedly worked for Lord Templemore but so far unproved. Do know where he lived? Strangely we have visited the Ayrshire villages but on our one try to see Bradley we couldn't locate it so once again many thanks. Jenny

Is anyone able to suggest where else I might look to find out where the following family (records courtesy of Knightroots) came from or went to? Does anyone have access to the 1851/61 census for Portsea? St Marys Portsea Baptisms page 9 no 67 Robert son of James & Elizabeth SAUNDERS Hyde Park Portsmouth Carpenter Feb 14 1834 page 114 no 908 John Charritt son of James & Elizabeth SAUNDERS Portsea age 114 no 909 Robert son of James & Elizabeth SAUNDERS born Dec 17 1833 & baptized June 23 1837 page 114 no 910 Matilda daughter of James & Elizabeth SAUNDERS born April 17 1837 & baptized June 23 1837 There is no mention of Father James in what Apprenticeship records exist, and no existing Settlement papers. Neither have I found a record of their parents' marriage, and no burials. There is not a Will on the PRO site, and the 1881 or 1901 censuses have helped. I have managed to trace Robert's progress to Deptford (marriage to Jane Amelia SCOTT not proven) but now I am completely stuck on his parents and siblings. Any help gratefully received. Yours Vicki Turner
hello all I am still trying to find a baptismal - or any other record - for Emma NEW born about 1857 Heckfield Hants, and her neice, Mary SELLWOOD born about 1880/1 Heckfield. In 1891 they were living in Mapledurham Oxon. Can anyone help? Yours Vicki Turner

A FAMILY HISTORIANS LAMENT Send in by Adele (pentony) Chris and Caroline AUTHOR UNKNOWN I've been doing family history for nearly 30 years, Diligently tracing my illustrious forebears, >From Pigeon Lake to Peterborough, Penrith to Penzance, My merry band of ancestors has led me quite a dance. There's cooks from Kent and guards from Gwent and chimney sweeps from Chester. There's even one daft fisherman lived all his life in Leicester, There's no- one rich or famous, no not even well-to-do, Though a second cousin twice removed once played in goal for Crewe. I've haunted record offices from Gillingham to Jarrow, The little grey cells of my mind would humble Hercule Poirot. I've deciphered bad handwriting that would shame a three year old, And brought the black sheep of the family back to the fold. My bride of just three minutes, I left standing in the church, As I nipped into the graveyard for a spot of quick research. Eventually I found an uncle, sixty years deceased. That was far more satisfying than a silly wedding feast, After three weeks of wedded bliss, my wife became despondent She named the public records office as the co-respondent. I didn't even notice when she packed her bags and went I was looking for a great granddad's will who'd died in Stoke on Trent But now my 30 year obsession's lying in the bin Last Tuesday week, I heard some news that made me pack it in. Twas then my darling mother, who is not long for this earth, Casually informed me they'd adopted me at birth! --- All of our Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Many, many thanks to everyone who replied to my request re above, including Steve HILLIER. (When I started this, I already had a feeling something cheeky would come out of Esperance!!!. Thanx, Steve, for the chuckle). When I was first told about Hilliers Gardens by Sue, I thought that was the answer as both my BEARE & WEEKS families produced working gardeners (Broadlands, Romsey, Stratton Park, Winchester & Palmerston Park, Southampton) but the more I learned about Hilliers, the less likely it seemed to be the connection. Just to have one more shot at it, this is what I found on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website in the Civilian Register - "In memory of Florence Emily WEEKS, wife of G.Weeks, of St. Hilliers, Romsey Road, at St. Hilliers, Romsey Road, who died as a result of enemy action on Sunday 1 December 1940, age 56. Commemorated in the County Borough of Southampton section of the Civilian War Dead Register". Her daugher Eva Mary, 21, was also killed as were Florence Ada BEARE, 27, wife of Ronald Edward Beare, & their sons Ronald, 8, Colin, 6 & Roger, 2. I assume Florence Ada BEARE & the boys were dau & grandsons of Florence Ada & G. WEEKS as their address was also given as St. Hilliers, Romsey Road. I think they were all my gran & grandpa's cousins. Do you think it might have been a largish house in the Nursling/Rownhams area ? I was unaware that semi rural areas of Southampton had been badly affected by the bombing. Maybe St. Hilliers was in Upper Shirley. Perhaps I'd better contact Joanne Smith at Southampton City Archives again. Any more ideas would be very gratefully received. Kind regards, Maureen, Hampshire Hog in Kiwiland, NZ
